Dr Robert Vernon of Walton attempted to end his life with morphine after a rejected dance invitation. He was saved by Dr Carpenter who administered antidote as Vernon recovered. He cited a love affair as the motive, and his family’s high standing complicates the case.
George Warner, 43, formerly of this city, faces execution on May 19 for killing Pulaski Leeds in Louisville. He rejects clemency, claims the act was deliberate, and says he would repeat it to defend the working class. He cites union sympathy and Leeds's refusal to return letters of recommendation. Warner's family details and prior attempts at suicide are noted.
Fellow prisoners discovered him just in time and he vows he will make no more attempts at death by own action. A strict guard has been kept on him and the death watch will be set.
The Citizens' club will meet Monday at 8 pm in Library hall. Attorney D. C. Arthur presents Divorce while National Organizer O. P. Smith explains Why Trades Unions are Necessary, followed by open discussion.
After a severe storm and heavy rain bridges were washed away and roads submerged, forcing rural carriers to detour by water and field paths. C. O. Robinson of route 10 and carriers on routes six and seven report widespread blockages and lengthy delays.
H. C. Ennis of Terre Haute is visiting the city, staying for a brief period and planning to attend local events during the stay.
The public works board delays action on charges against a Front street station captain and a fireman. A board member says the inquiry will cover only the current administration, and no heads will roll. Since the new board took office, officials claim the department has improved and behaved well.
The high school Glee and Mandolin clubs presented a clever entertainment to a large auditorium audience last night. Selections were catchy and well finished with unexpected polish. Miss Minnie Starr aided by readings was exceptionally good and shows promise. The glee club features several members with voices above average, especially the tenors. Miss Clara Doek's accompaniment was good.
N W Benning, allied with New Work, reports brisk growth for the Two Harbors association after moving with his family from Logansport. Membership rose from 199 to 358 as the group thrives. He praises the lake view site and anticipates a pleasant summer.
County commissioners seek to sue Wilson, Humphreys & Co for 10000 dollars they allege was unlawfully borrowed from the county treasury. The action is delayed pending Judge Rabb’s arrival as Judge Larry is tied to Obenchain bonds.
Indiana Odd Fellows and Rebekahs gather in Indianapolis and Greensburg next week for two grand lodge events. Logansport units travel in force for the Rebekah assembly session and grand lodge communication. The Greensburg home dedication, with a thousand members expected, tops the four day program. The dedicatory oration will be given by A S Pinkerton of Massachusetts.
A pleasant family reunion is underway at Mrs. T. A. Krolman at 17 Brown Street. Her sisters Mrs. F. M. Smith of Mt. Pleasant Michigan and Mrs. I. Orr of Peru are visiting, with Mrs. Smith noting they had not seen each other since 1871, thirty four years ago.
Judge Anderson in Indianapolis ruled for the P. P. Mast Co. of Springfield Ohio in the Watts bankruptcy dispute. The court found the Mast claim valid that Watts held goods as agent with no payment passing, returning Buckeye machinery goods worth about 300 dollars to the manufacturers. Attorneys C. E. Yarlett and R. B. Long spoke for Mast & Co. The decision may affect Coquillard Wagon Co. where Watts acted as agent.
Logansport youths secretly smoke on interurban cars by occupying the smoker coach while checking for officers. They light a cigarette on boarding and again on the return trip, believing they avoid arrest but risking discovery as a vigilant conductor or officer patrols the cars.
Fred Crain Phil Thompson and Bert Summerland returned home after a week in Chicago arranged by the division superintendent of the United States express company to seek wagon driver jobs during the strike. They found the atmosphere there too tense and decided to abandon the venture.
Farmers thronged the city streets in brisk business after a storm kept them away. Rival Cass County citizens arrived today to stock up as grocery supplies ran out and residents filled Login for supplies.
Mrs Jonathan Shafer, formerly a guest of her daughter Mrs George W Lacy, has returned to Monticello after her visit.
Water rose on the East Drive and threatened the Riverside park basin as the Eel river overflow increased. The public works board rapidly built a small levee by eight o clock, stopping the flood and preventing damage to park grounds and structures. By midnight water subsided and this afternoon the area stood about a foot below the high water mark. Ice houses east of the park were swamped and accessible only by wading.
Last night the north east wall of the city electric light plant building collapsed into the river after being weakened by water wash from a cinder heap. Superintendent Loftus inspected the site and attempted repairs with bricks and scrap iron, but the wall failed. The building corner shows exposed foundation, a renewed crack, and the dam abutment remains firm with no imminent danger.
The Indians defeated the high school squad 11 to 9 in thirteen innings. Key moments include Wolf's strong batting and Scherdman's running fly catch for the Indians. Lineup features Been, Schwardman, Wise, Smith, Wolf, H. Smith, Ryan, Blake and Panton for the Indians. Thomas, Sample, Kron, Grigsby, Place, Klinek, Ferguson, Waters, Brown for the high school.
