City council votes salaries for new and existing officials and appropriations totaling 158000 for April 15 to January 1 1906, with 225000 estimated for the year. Officials receive set annual pay and daily rates, while departments face tight budgeting to cover added payrolls.
In a Bailey's saloon dispute over a five dollar bill, Elmer Michaels allegedly owed Nelson three dollars. Nelson refused to return the money after a fight on the sidewalk, hit his head on the curb, and was arrested for intoxication while claiming the money was owed. He was later bailed and released.
John Heiden a Plum street grocer was arrested and jailed on an insanity affidavit filed by his family who fear he may harm himself. A sanity inquest will be held in Justice Reid's court to determine if he is of unsound mind and likely sent to Longcliff if deliberations find him mentally unfit.
William Norton and his wife were taken into custody after a public quarrel on Third Street. Police briefly detained them at the station house and urged them to go home and behave themselves before being released.
Commercial club members report the fund drive for the Fourth of July celebration is nearly complete and a final financial decision is near. Trustees will meet to canvass the subject and a 20 member committee is needed to move arrangements forward for a creditable Logansport birthday celebration.
A team of horses pulling a large dray loaded with house sections ran wild on Seventh Street and nearby roads. They bumped trees and poles, dropped veranda posts and window frames along the route, and scatters parts of a house across the street. No injuries were reported, and the horses eventually slowed and halted after causing extensive debris.
The Hebrew Cemetery association holds its annual meeting tonight to review the year's work, submit reports, and elect officers for the ensuing year. The organization reports are in fine condition and current officers are expected to be re elected.
The Panhandle shops reopened after the May appropriation took effect at midnight. Operations restarted Monday with the workforce back at machines and forges, ending a temporary shutdown due to April funding exhaustion. Officials expect no further shutdowns for months as freight and passenger traffic demand full use of equipment.
The police and firemen who receive mid month pay did not get their salary on Monday due to administrative changes. The council will review all claims tomorrow night and, upon approval, draw orders will be turned over to the board of public works until next May.
Broadway jeweler Hal Smith claims a collie sent from Texas hunts mushrooms. The dog, described as uniquely trained, led a party to dozens of mushrooms in fields and woods, returning with most of the harvest.
P. A. Costello, formerly of Grass Creek and now an engineer on the Panama canal, writes Desk Sergeant Costello that the project is progressing very slowly. He says he has been in Panama two weeks and finds the situation unsettled.
The narrator notes the climate is much better than feared from newspaper stories about Panama. He includes a coin, valued highly by Costello, that resembles a dime but is not.
Fire engines responded to No 16 Melbourne avenue this morning shortly after 9 o clock and found a small shed at the rear of the residence in flames. The blaze was subdued with little loss. The shed owner is Dr Little and the occupant is J D Jarrett and family. Mr Jarrett works at Ray s grocery on Market street.
Mack Carson of Twelve Mile, formerly employed by Shiri and Haskett at Hoover Elevator, was arrested in Peru on forgery charges. A signed check for 117 dollars stolen from the firm and cashed at a Peru bank was used to debit the account. Carson’s arrest followed an affidavit by the firm and detective Silas Morgar. He reportedly broke down when arrested and has no prior trouble.
A large Logansport audience filled Dowling's opera house last night to hear Mr. Bicknell Young discuss Christian Science for about ninety minutes. He avoided controversy and clearly stated the core principles, addressing misquotations and misunderstandings and winning new friends for the movement.
County commissioners remain in session as bondsmen of Obenchain prepare a petition asking Cass County to assume part of the debt. A meeting last night yielded no definite action while they review petitions and plan a recap of property represented before filing.
John Ballard son of Dr and Mrs Ballard has been ill but is improving.
The council pressed for a full ledger of every transaction by the street commissioner while in office. Alderman Boyer led the push, charging private deals and noting $76 in claims. The report was referred back for verification, amid other actions on a North Side school building, bonds, and deeds.
Judge Rabb from Williamsport sat in Logansport for a day and disposed of remonstrators in the Bradfield ditch case, sending the commissioners' report back for alterations. He also heard Crescent Construction Co vs Fred Gale and took the default-set-aside matter under advisement.
H H Easterly, road engineer for Union Traction, is in the city to review the company’s interests and inspect local facilities.
