Death of Bethlehem township assessor Earry B. Cook occurred yesterday at 8 30 am at his home in Bethlehem. The county auditor must fill the vacancy to complete the current annual assessment. Funeral is Sunday at 7 19 o'clock from Bethlehem M E church with interment at the adjacent cemetery.
John Whitsett and Robert W. Whitsett received a long distance message from Anderson announcing the death of their father John W. Whitsett, aged 84, who died at his daughter’s home in Anderson at 3 this morning. Surviving children include Robert W. Whitsett of Logansport and siblings Ida M Binck, Osa Lece, and Burton Whitsett. Funeral planned for Sunday with interment in Anderson.
Mrs. Sarah A. Caw widow of Andrew Caw died at 77 in Bethlehem township from old age. Funeral Monday at 2 pm at Metea Baptist Church with service by Rev. E. F. Naftzger. cortege leaves 1 pm from the family home. Charles P. Bowyer of Chicago died Thursday. burial in Walton after arrival via Panhandle. funeral Sunday at 2 pm. Miss Constance Bradfield’s funeral held today at Trinity Episcopal Church. interment at Mt Hope Cemetery.
The examination to choose a carrier for a new rural route south of the city is held at Commercial Business high school. Twelve applicants participate. more were deterred by missing application blanks due to Washington department negligence. Reading addresses proves the toughest challenge for many, with handwriting resembling hen scratchings.
A special Panhandle train will pass through the city tomorrow morning from Chieaze to Indianapolis bearing the secret of the Ben Hur production that recently closed at the Illinois Theatre, Cucazo. It will open for a week Monday at the English in Indianapolis.
A second hand store revolver, nickeled with blood, carries a card recalling the 6th street pursuit of Marvin Kuhns by Patrolman Benjamin Deane. Deane was wounded in the encounter and Kuhns escaped. the 44 calibre Colt was later sold to a dealer.
Walton resident Veletice Taylor was released at 10 o clock after the grand jury failed to return a true bill on murder charges in the death of his friend and farm hand Jack Taylor. The coroner and jurors found no definite basis for a verdict of malice.
Mrs. Mary K Landis received a telegram from Washington announcing her son Kenesaw M Landis was confirmed by the United States Senate as a federal judge for the new Illinois district.
The county grand jury, after one of its longest terms, returned twenty five indictments with no arrests yet. Four indictments were previously reported, including Florence Mitchell murder and Raymond Jackson larceny. Bonds are being set, and the cases will be public next week. The jury also reviewed county facilities finding the poor farm barn inadequate and recommending a new one and updated water heating for stock. jail findings were neutral. Court Clerk William H. Jacks notes the unusually small number of indictments for such a lengthy session and recalls past counts of a hundred.
Logansport friends learn Harry N May former Panhandle Chicago division trainmaster has left railroading to join Kregele Bayley May Indianapolis as an undertaker. He previously conducted a run between Indianapolis and Columbus and resigns to begin new business work amid industry quiet and change.
Alva Reeder aged twenty one residing on Spear street was arraigned before Mayor McKee for throwing stones at an interurban car on Erie avenue. He pleaded guilty and was fined ten dollars and costs totaling twenty dollars. Unable to pay he was jailed. The street railway company sought full prosecution to deter others and end nuisance to trains.
Charles Benjamin, found dead between Vandalia railroad tracks, appeared in police court and pled guilty to intoxication. He was sentenced to ten days in jail to sleep in jail and to discourage future risky behavior.
Floyd Yarbro was arrested last night for intoxication after causing a disturbance at Closson's pool room on Third Street. Officers summoned and jailed him. this morning he received a ten day sentence in the calaboose.
Howard Allen, a noted amateur goalie for the Laurals, nearly joined a professional polo team Thursday night. Charles Chase, who oversees all amateur games at the rink, prevented the move after Terre Haute’s coal tender was injured. Allen regrets not taking the chance.
Silas Stonebraker reports roads in Cass County are the finest for this time of year since 1852 with no rain and an unusually early season. Experts warn that a rainfall shortage may hurt later crops as wells dry and creeks shrink, though current conditions boost farmers preparing plows and field work.
Work on the federal building advances rapidly as plasterers finish the lobby ceiling and ornamentation and begin on the main areas. The interior is described as handsome with a massive government style. Cement basement floor is under way and all tasks target July 1 completion.
Two men canvassing Logansport to sell a patent clothes rack say they will defy a city license law for peddling from house to house. They were arrested after being warned by Desk Officer Costello and later consulted an attorney who calls the ordinance unconstitutional. They plan to resume canvassing Monday and court action will follow.
At Broadway and Thirteenth Streets an arc light over the crossing endangers street cars. The light is too low and the trolley pole smashes the globe when cars enter and leave the siding. City electric department and street car company must raise the light or restrict trolley movement to prevent further damage.
N W Benning reports he is pleased with his move to Two Harbors Minnesota to lead the R M C A. He says the climate differs little from Logansport and the Lake Superior front building is fine with delightful people. He anticipates strong opportunities in the field.
March winds swept Logansport with sun and showers alternating in quick succession. Pedestrians held hats against sudden gusts as the breeze teased forecasts for stronger conditions to follow.
Thirty nine Burlington business leaders petition Logansport Commercial club to route the Fort Wayne and Wabash Valley Traction line via Burlington and Horlington via Michigan Road. They pledge funding and operation, urging club action to secure the route and mutual trade benefits for Logansport and Lafayette.
Mr and Mrs Carl S Wise discuss a three weeks visit to Bermuda Islands. They report warm weather like summer, strawberry harvests and tropical fruit everywhere. They observed the British squadron maneuvering off the islands.
Weldon Banta resigns from Panhandle freight office and, with Oto Burgman and Grant Tony, plans to travel to Goldfield Nevada. They hope to strike it rich in the Eldora, dreaming of returning someday wealthy, and have the good wishes of many friends.
