An early morning false alarm on North Sixth Street triggered a fire crew response to box 44 at 2 20 a m. Residents found the church unscathed and no blaze was located after a careful search. A janitor is blamed for breaking the box glass, causing the scare.
Residents reported smoke from English Lutheran Church and a city alarm sent firefighters to the scene. The basement furnace was found smoking but no blaze, the janitor had lit a fire earlier to warm the building and left. Minimal damage, smoke cleared after ventilation.
Jack Carr four years old, son of Mr and Mrs Tom Carr, nearly fell from the Sutton hotel porch onto a skylight above the Reporter linotype area yesterday at five. He slipped headfirst through broken glass but caught himself and escaped serious injury with only minor cuts to the head.
Alva Reeder of 1208 Spear street was arrested by Officer Grahams for throwing stones at an interurban car on Erie avenue. No damage occurred but the transit company seeks to curb the growing practice. Reeder, twenty one, was noticeably intoxicated at arrest.
An aged Cass County resident William Harness was found dead in bed on Wednesday morning from heart failure. The Cass County coroner conducted an inquest, noting no doubt of the cause being a natural death. Relatives in the eastern part of the county are mentioned.
Circuit Court fills with Harrison and Bethlehem farmers for the remonstrance against the William P Peterson ditch assessment. Grand jury to decide today. witnesses and spectators number about fifty as the dispute over the Gault ditch construction to the Tippecanoe river unfolds.
End of the grand jury term closes after a lengthy session awaiting experts report on accounts of Elder F Obenchain, the defaulting treasurer. The public may never know if a true bill was found against Frank Obenchain without an arrest, given the deficit evidence.
City officials argue ordinances could require railroads to install and maintain lights at all street crossings. Lights must match city standards and be on thirty minutes before each train. In downtown and outskirts, continuous or near continuous lighting would be needed to protect grade crossings.
The board of managers at the home for the friendless denounces a city press article alleging Mrs. Davisson’s children are under quarantine at the orphans’ home and two are ill with diphtheria. They claim Mrs. Davisson is not at the home but employed in a private family and fear for her safety as she hides from her husband.
The Woman's Club offers a prize to the Ft Wayne resident who makes the best lawn improvement this summer. Eligibility targets those with annual incomes not exceeding 1200 dollars, not just the wealthy. The idea is praised as admirable and worth note in Logansport.
A proposed change by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, approved by General Manager W. W. Atterbury, would lower the retirement age from 65 to 11 years of service and set a compulsory retirement age of 70. C M Schaffer superintendent of passenger transportation and D C Stewart superintendent of telegraph for the western Pennsylvania lines will arrive in Logansport during their inspection tour. They will observe the lines and become better acquainted with the local situation.
Information from Thornhope north of the Pan handle indicates an elderly resident has received a whitecap notice and a capping is likely. Earlier this week a bunch of switches was found on the doorstep of the villager in question.
Revenue Department issues strict rule banning empty cigar boxes from displays after May 1. Logansport dealers warned that using boxes with manufacturer branding and notices will face arrest and penalties. Regulators say the move prevents fraud and loss to government and manufacturers.
Baer Kessler once of this city now studying in Waukegan is barred from Zion City by Prophet Dowie. He quit Dowie’s faith after accusing Dowie of grafters and sharing insider news with newspapers. The decree blocks him from Zion homes and requires his parents to meet him away from Zion properties.
A special from Omaha reports the marriage of Mayor Frank E. Moores of Omaha to Miss Mary Regina Malone. The wedding took place in Phoenix, where Moores has wintered. Malone has served as his private secretary since 1890 and is known at Omaha City Hall as Mayor Malone. Moores has visited here several times and is brother-in-law of Mrs. John Alber.
A meeting of the creditors of the defunct North Manchester bank will be held in Logansport March 25. Judge D B McConnell has sent notices requesting creditors to attend his office on that date. A petition by Lewis Signs trustee to sell bank real estate will be acted upon along with other matters related to bank indebtedness.
Dr. Nelson of Logansport and osteopaths statewide celebrate winning representation on the state board of medical registration and examination. Governor Hanly appoints F. E. Holland of Bloomington as the osteopathic member, completing the new statute’s provisions and ending their campaign to rectify the perceived injustice.
Rev Charles Baustin notified church officers of his acceptance to the pastorate. Due to college work at Wittenberg College Rev Baustin will not assume charge until about May.
Electric committee ends arc light meters in downtown stores causing widespread outages. About thirty five lamps have been removed as merchants protest that city initially invited the lights and billing changed after installation making costs higher.
Unknown to friends, John Herman Voss and Bertha May Overholser wed last evening after meeting on the street and going to a minister’s home directly from work. Voss is junior member of Johnston & Voss cigar makers. his bride is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Overholser.
Police arrested Charles Benjamin of Lucerne after he slept drunk on Vandalia tracks in Vandalia. Officer George Graham arrested Robert Hunter after drunken wandering and a failed pickup for a patrol wagon. Hinshaw jailed ten days after a craps dispute with Frank Coyle at Cohen Milburn’s saloon.
An explosion at 9:30 near the Lutheran school on Sixth Street sent residents fleeing. Henry Barnhart is excavating the rear of a frame building at Sixth and Broadway for a plating works moving from Broadway. Workers found a huge boulder and used dynamite to break it, causing the blast. One man noted the event avoided a supposed Japanese attack on the Sixth Street engine house.
Oliver Hand of the Royal Center Record directs Coroner Neff of this county to notify Royal Center by telephone if he plans to divide expropriated remains revenue. He urges finishing the deal with a “free horse to death” as a notable incentive.
