The Panhandle railroad engineer Charled Laing, age fifty two, was crushed when his engine toppled off the track at Remington while returning from Effner. Fireman Charles Collett escaped unharmed. Laing had served since 1876 and left a wife and four grown children.
Kistler and Kistler of Logansport representing Charlies Wilson as administrator for eleven Italian and Austrian victims of the Cass wreck on the Wabash conferred in Logansport. Wabash Railroad counsel Stuart of Lafayette also attended. Settlement was not yet arranged but expected before term end. if terms fail, trial will proceed.
Carroll County will have no senator for two years after being merged into a district with Cass County. Senator Powell will continue, elected by Cass and Pulaski counties. In the House Carroll gains a joint representative with Howard and Clinton counties, a move that leaves Carroll underrepresented in the lower chamber.
Samuel M. Miller formerly of Indianapolis was welcomed by three hundred former coworkers in Logansport. Byron Logan presented a gold watch and the crowd praised his transfer to Panhandle shops. Miller thanked the men and recalled pleasant memories from Indianapolis.
Government plans an experiment to issue and pay money orders on rural routes to gauge feasibility. After months of study officials will trial the system in Indiana and other states with established rural free delivery.
Yesterday after noon the fire department responded to a small roof fire at the home of Charles Schrier at Linden avenue and Elm street. The blaze, likely from a chimney spark, was put out with chemicals in minutes. About ten dollars of roof damage.
Mrs. George W. Swadey of Wabash and Mrs. Karl Lewis of Columbus Ohio spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. W H Jacks during a social visit.
Miss Dora Welsh has resumed her position in the Home telephone exchange after a brief illness at her East Broadway home.
Mrs Ketchum sprained ankle and Mrs Huffman bruised when a frightened horse ran away during a Long Cliff drive. The buggy overturned and was dragged before the horse bolted free. Both women were treated at the hospital and sent home. the horse was unharmed.
Special agents of the census bureau will be sent to Indiana to collect data on wealth debt and taxation. The project aims to compile a detailed record of assessed real and personal property values and tax bases across states counties townships and municipalities. The work will rely heavily on correspondence but may involve in‑person visits in large states.
Farmers and business leaders statewide praise the Kokomo market bill approved by the last legislature authorizing market house construction in county seats. Though years may pass before wide adoption, proponents expect counties to seek appropriations as benefits become clear. Howard County backed the measure and may host the first market.

A twelve year old boy, Raymond Sheridan of Decatur, sat in the police station charged with burglary. He admitted breaking into Smith Prescott’s meat market on Sixteenth Street and stealing fifteen cents from the money drawer while avoiding eye contact with reporters.
No official order issued about a permanent move and higher officials won’t discuss. Report says Superintendent Hatch seeks return to Terre Haute for family reasons, while Crockett continues as longtime Terre Haute division chief. Local staffs expected to stay unchanged.
A Carroll county exchange urges stone crushing in Delphi to replace mud prone gravel. It argues a $500 plant could crush eighty to one hundred wagon loads daily, cutting yearly road haulage costs and meeting new rural mail route repair requirements with lasting crushed stone roads.
Mrs. Daniel Kerns, rushed to St. Joseph hospital last week from her Sixth street home, is reported as no better and the attending physician says there is no hope for her recovery.
In police custody the lad appeared withdrawn. His parents live on Sixteenth street and he offers no excuse for the indiscretion. Police may drop the case from the state as the boy has no prior offenses.
Fred Brashour a married man from Decatur Illinois was arrested Sunday night by police and jailed on insanity charges. He was seen running without coat hat or vest on the commons near the Peoria junction on the West Side. His clothing was later found scattered across the area as officers investigated. A letter to his relatives in Decatur was sent to determine his disposition.
The Panhandle railroad company employs about fifty men to dig up Canal street between Third and Fourth to pave the mud hole that spoils the depot waiting platform. Paving to begin at once if the weather permits proper work.
A Saturday gathering at Mrs Neff's Market Street home discussed the program and approved joining the state federation of woman's clubs. The next meeting is set for March 21 at Mrs Obenchain's Maple Grove home.
Mrs Amy Williams Cornell aged 88 years 9 months and 11 days longtime Cass county resident died Saturday at 9 PM at her son Jerome M Williams 1413 George Street She was born in Ohio in 1814 married twice first to James W Williams then to Joseph B Cornell She was a charter member of the First Universalist Church and is survived by two children sister and other relatives Funeral services Tuesday at 2 PM at her residence conducted by Reverends Vossema and Hootman Burial at Hope Cemetery
William Painter a noted cigar maker and local union member died yesterday morning at 5 o'clock in Alexian hospital Chicago from pneumonia. He was 24, son of Mrs Schau of Race Street and formerly worked with John Courtney and John Schilling in Logansport. His funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 PM at his mother's home 631 Race Street conducted by Rev. W S Dysinger with interment at Mt Hope Cemetery.
The funeral for Mrs. Mary Garrity wife of John Garrity and mother of Miss Mary Garrity who runs the Fourth street millinery shop was held at 9 this morning from St. Bridget’s Church with Rev Father Kroeger officiating. Interment followed at Mt St Vincent cemetery.
The funeral for William H. Conover who died Saturday at 3 30 PM was conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock from his brother Mahlon Conover's residence at 107 Fifth Street. Burial followed at Mt Hope Cemetery.

Lewis Clark and John Blight face trial in Cass circuit court for the August 30 1902 attempted robbery of Adams Express transfer office in Logansport. Night clerk Morris Callahan heroically protected the property firing as the robbers fled. Detective Morgan helped arrest the pair in Denison Ohio after a long pursuit.
A planned merger between the Indianapolis Northern Traction and Union Traction faces a legal challenge. George J. Marott, owner of the Kokomo electric line and a Union Traction stockholder, argues the act is unconstitutional and may seek an injunction to stop the merger.
