Last evening around 7 15 o clock a fire scare arose at A B Maple’s grocery at the corner of Nineteenth and Broadway. Maple had just filled a customer order for a gallon of oil and, not thinking, placed the can in the middle of the floor.
A two story brick business house owned by D. J. Kemp and used by David Dillman as a restaurant collapsed after water undermined the structure. No one was inside. Loss likely about $1,000 as thawed ice weakened bricks. Kemp inspects and may rebuild.
Mrs W W Smith of Frankfort and her sister Mrs Nettie Smith of Young America have been notified they are heirs to a large William Penn estate in Delaware and Pennsylvania. The two are direct descendants on their mother’s side and expect to receive their rights in due course.
Miss Beatrice Whitfield is confined to her home on Wheatland Avenue with an attack of lagrippe.
The annual readjustment by the Postoffice Department in Washington Indiana yields sizable raises for Indiana staff. In Logansport at least one employee gains 100 annually, with many clerks statewide receiving 100 or 200 boosts across multiple cities including Indianapolis Fort Wayne and Valparaiso. Several offices show multiple clerks advancing with varied increments from 100 to 200 dollars.
Fanny Powell cells in Justice Reid's court for a surety of the peace against her husband John Powell a laborer. She accuses him of threats and repeated beating driving her from home and asks bond to keep the peace while indicating she does not seek divorce if he treats her properly. The couple reside on the West Side.
James Walsmith was fined 15.50 in Justice Kloenne's court for intoxication and ordered jailed for nonpayment. He was arrested outside Florian Keller's pool room after chasing a crowd of lads on Market street bridge. Keller described Walsmith as seeking trouble and making threats before police, led away by Officer Berney Burch.
Four women Anna Johnson Ethel Penny Jennie Diver Trent and Bertha Pfiffer Jones were arrested for associating with lewd women and frequenting a wine room behind a Fourth Street saloon run by Saxon. They pleaded not guilty and the trial began this afternoon at 3 o clock before Justice Kloenne.
Albert Smith who runs a saloon on Market Street between Second and Third Streets was arrested last night. His trial is scheduled for Monday morning at 9 oclock.
Logansport Indiana March 11 cigarette use by girl students alarms high school faculty. Previously confiscations from boys occurred but a smoke filled assembly room led to missing pupils and a basement smoking room with smoldering stubs. The faculty vows prosecutions for ongoing tobacco sales to pupils especially girls.
Arthur Dodd left yesterday afternoon to travel to Peru on a business assignment.
Mrs. Mary J. Williamson, longtime Cass County resident, died Thursday at 1 p.m. at her son Samuel Williamson's home in Boone township aged 76. She lived in the county all her life, spending fifty years in Boone township. She leaves four sons and one daughter.
The Maiden divorce case went to the Cass circuit court jury this morning at 11 o'clock after two days of testimony. A large number of witnesses were examined as the laundryman Charles Maiden stood trial on the divorce petition with a decision expected that evening.
Mrs. Williamson, aged and overweight, visiting her daughter Mrs. Troutman at 1750 North street, fell at the head of the stairs in Jefferson township. The leg injury never healed, hastening her death. Funeral at Pisgah church Saturday at 2 pm conducted by Rev. Walter Johnston.
Charles Maiden seeks to establish a $1800 claim for care of his father during life. Walter Maiden contests, arguing no agreement existed allowing any payment for attentions.
Oscar B. Conant, admitted to practice Wednesday in the Cass circuit court, filed his first case today. The suit, Daniel Watts versus Jesse Dague, seeks $90.60 on a promissory note for $75 issued by the defendant.
Orion McCracken a laundryman at Star laundry sues for divorce from wife Lillie McCracken claiming abandonment after a trip home led to an empty house and missing furnishings. He charges statutory cruelty and inhuman treatment and cites their 1899 marriage.
John C. McGregor files a suit in partition against Willard W Wharfield Ora Mable Johnson and Noah Wharfield seeking division of common property and related relief in a probate matter filed in the jurisdiction.
Directors met at Rev. A M Hochman home and set August 12 through September 7 as the year’s Maxinkuckee Assembly dates. Officials report a flattering outlook with a strong tenting grounds demand and hundreds of applications. Last year’s debut met with marvelous success.

In Peru, George Smith from Bernice Pa. was found starving in a Wabash freight car after two days with no food. Locked and sealed at Clifton Lil, he gnawed a hole in the car wall to free his hand and seek help. A passing switchman noticed the protruding arm and intervened.
A half dead youngster was opened from a car door, warmed, fed, and given shelter by sympathetic friends. He will be sent toward home as soon as his condition improves.
A Washington dispatch says sketch plans for new federal buildings in Muncie Richmond and Logansport will be begun by the treasury supervising architect. Titles are secured and deeds filed. Working plans expected early fall, with construction not to start for about a year. Local impatience in Logansport noted, but federal timing prevails.
Will W. Lockwood of Peru has been chosen by the international Y M C A committee to lead European work in Shanghai China and will sail next September. He is the third Indiana man to take a major foreign post in two years joining W W Helm of North Manchester now in Japan and N W Helm named international secretary at Peking to oversee native university students.
Residents demand an interlo switch at the Panhandle and Monon crossing in Monticello as signal gates have been struck and destroyed twice by fast freight trains in a week. Officials warn a collision could occur if occupied tracks were not clear.
Mrs. Samuel Espy and her children Curtis and Nancy have come back from Indianapolis where they had been at the bedside of Mrs. Espy’s mother who remains critically ill.
A laborer about forty from West Pullman died after a train under Conductor Ed Gardner struck him at West Pullman station. The man walked on the track unsteady and lurched into the locomotive, sustaining a skull fracture and broken arm. A whisky flask found nearby suggested liquor contributed to the accident. Warren Ferguson of Lake Forest University arrived home today after the incident.
In Burnettsville and Champaign areas, Mrs. Amick, longtime wife of Charles Amick, killed herself with carbolic acid after doctors said he would die soon. He died three hours later. Mrs. Amick was buried in Champaign while Charles Amick was laid to rest near Burnettsville beside his first wife.
Gov Durbin vetoed a bill to compel Flora to repay $3,000 to Monroe Township for the annexed school house. The veto cited harm as a general measure. Flora, incorporated with the building in township territory, faces debt and lack of lights fire protection and water.
