A gasoline fueled carpet cleaning accident at John Houghton’s home at 13 Helm Street caused a noon blaze. Mrs. Houghton was burned on the head and face but managed to escape with neighbors helping extinguish flames before the fire department arrived. Little property damage occurred.
United States District Attorney Joseph B. Kealing filed suit in federal court asking for a board of appraisers to value Volney Q. Irwin’s Crawfordsville lot and for a court order to compel sale to the government after valuation. The city of Crawfordsville, with liens on the property, is named as defendant.
Oliver Hand notes in the Royal Center Record that Dr Pryor preserves rare books including a 1766 Christian Piety that argues against colonial war, an 1812 Botany volume, an 1813 Scriveners Guide, and a 200 year old surgery treatise. He recalls an 1841 Cash county tax duplicate kept in the treasurer’s vault, written with a quill and reflecting the era.
Boone was swampy and lightly taxed with about 78 dollars in revenue while Harrison was older, denser, and higher, offering better access. Today Boone is improved and poised for a close race with the strongest contenders.
The Sunday schools of Boone township hold the second 1903 convention at Grace Evangelical Church Royal Center on Sunday March 3 starting 2 30 p m The program lists devotions reports addresses songs recitations and miscellaneous business as officers request 1 for county work from schools not yet paid.
Frank Kistler of Hoovers is in the pest house after traveling from Vandalia by train. He was found with smallpox while in the waiting room and was placed in the detention hospital despite his and his father's initial denial. Health officers removed him to the hospital by wagon.
An examination of applicants for rural route carriers will be held in the council chamber on Tuesday of next week. A dozen men will be needed for the new routes laid out by Inspector Ela and those who score best will be given the positions. The examination will be conducted by Mr. Ela and is expected to take all day.
In Cass circuit court the Royal Center saloon license cases against Frank Friemel John Abelhouser Jr and Horace Grable gained time as objections argued a plea in abatement. The key issue is legality of publication in the Banner News Logansport a new edition claimed as a vest pocket scheme to outwit Boone township residents. The county commissioners had refused licenses prompting the delay to next term.
A panel of Drs J W Stewart and J L Gilbert and Squire Kloenne held an inquest into Charles Paul son of Levi Paul of Clinton township and found him an unsound mind fit for Longcliff. He has no hallucinations, but a simple softening of the brain from abuse.
Illness of two principal witnesses delays the trial of Lewis Clark and John Blight. Both men, jailed on charges of attempted robbery at the Adams Express office at Panhandle station last fall, now face a new date set for Monday March 15. Eight officials and witnesses from Columbus and Denison, Ohio, attended today and returned home this afternoon.
William E Prather lawsuit against Sarah Harness guardian dismissed. Arthur Herrmann suit against Frederick Rech for medical bill dismissed. Cost bond filed by Port Huron Engine and Thresher Co in case against Harry Maxwell.
Dispatcher C. C. Arrick, staying beside his ill wife, dozed off and woke abruptly as both his feet slept. He leaped up, stumbled, and twisted his ankle severely in the bedchamber, an accident described as very serious.
Frederick Landis congressman for the district denies a report that he arranged to appoint George Stout as his private secretary. Landis says no rush and that he may not need a secretary before leaving soon on a southern trip.
Mrs. Arthur Hobson of Market street entertained the Ladies of the Merry-go-Round club at dinner yesterday.
A little girl waiting in the Panhandle station waited for adopted parents Mr and Mrs Charles Yankee of Fulton County to meet her after a trip to relatives in Sheldon Indiana. She searched benches and windows for hours before they arrived.
A district Red Men meeting is planned in the city on May 5 with chiefs from several tribes including Nos. 11 87 90 173 181 and 207 attending. The Loganport event is set on the fifth sun of the Flower Moon in Red Men tradition, resembling a Knights of Pythias gathering.
A frightened little girl wandered near a depot in heavy dusk. An officer located and sheltered her, later arranging shelter with a kindly family at 728 North Street. Police alerted her parents, who were searching after a delayed travel plan. Mr Yankee arrived from another city and helped reunite the child with foster parents. Community members aided the night’s safety as detectives tracked the case. Strong state meetings are announced with dates in Plant Moon and Flower Moon, including Logansport.
Mishawaka township trustee reports finding Mrs. Sophia Wey in a filthy two room hut with hair unkept and no food during winter. He states the elderly woman had not left her bed and showed signs of severe neglect and illness.
A trustee preparing to send a destitute woman to the poor house discovered about $700 in her pocket and $300 in gold in a trunk. She said she kept the funds to avoid being molested while living in squalor. Authorities deposited the money in the First National Bank.
A resident reported to the mayor his petition to fix the Sixth Street bridge over the L R and N Traction tracks citing dangerous grooved flooring and sunken boards. He said an accident narrowly avoided by two women in a buggy and urged the street commissioner to investigate and notify the company to repair at once.
Clarence Blakeslee, owner in Peru, informs the Peru Journal that the Main street electric line to Logansport is within weeks. Engines and machinery are in final place at the new power station addition and will be ready to operate once poles arrive. Forty foot Canal street poles were replaced by fifty foot poles, now shipping from Idaho to align with the start.
The North Side Literary club will debate the resolution Columbus Did More in Discovering America than Washington Did in Saving It next Tuesday evening. A large crowd is expected to attend as the topic allows room for argument and eloquence and a literary program will accompany the discussion.
David A. Shaw, named postmaster to replace Albert Gaylor, asks Gaylor to surrender the office but Gaylor refuses, claiming a March 29 commission and intent to serve four years. A Washington order is being sought. Both men are Republicans and the dispute centers on who rightly holds the post.
Mrs Jane A Lee aged 56, wife of William H Lee, died last evening at 9 at No 15 Sixth Street. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 PM from the residence with Rev Lawrence officiating. Interment will be in Mt Hope Cemetery.
Dan Porter, conductor on the Panhandle, is off duty because of an acute reaction to vaccination.
Frank Kistler a smallpox patient escaped from a detention hospital in Logansport after a visit with his father and a physician. Authorities pursued but he slipped away at Vandalia station and was not seen since.
A London dispatch reports that West End exquisites and military fashion leaders demand ultra slim waists for men. Corsets, priced 30 to 50 shillings and sized around 36 inches, spread among frock coats overcoats and lounge jackets. Women adopt black velvet bands with pearls and diamonds for a striking neck effect.
Clyde B. Zeigler of Fairmount, who runs a grocery, has filed for bankruptcy in Referee Swigart's court. Reported liabilities total 2,613.09 with assets of 221. Exemption claimed 60. Several Logansport firms are involved. he is married.
Y L Bryant of the southwest outskirts returned from Port Huron Michigan where he was visiting and studying the land question. He may move there with his family in the fall.
