Mitchell declines Illinois governorship bid
John Mitchell former president of the United Mine Workers of America will not seek the Democratic nomination for Illinois governor. The Chicago Federation of Labor political action committee announced its backing was withdrawn and Mitchell cited health and a focus on industrial work as reasons for remaining out of electoral politics. He said he would rather lead the trade agreement department of the National Civic Federation and continue promoting industrial peace through collective bargaining. Secretary Edward N. Nockels said petitions circulating on Mitchell’s behalf would be recalled and destroyed.
