Prairie Fire Threatens Homes Near Melbourne Avenue
A prairie fire scorched twenty acres at the end of Melbourne avenue and West Market street, destroying barns and residences of William Gust and James Woodward. Residents including Mrs Gust and Mrs Nash fought flames with brooms and shovels as smoke choked them, the fire halted within thirty feet of the barns with help from the fire department and a chemical hose. Nash’s cow escaped with minor burns.

Child Rescued After Narrow Bridge Railing Tip
Two year old child leaned over the Third Street Bridge railing, crying for mother until George W. Stanley took the child to police.
