Charles Schnell a waiter at the Boone cafe on Third street found a pocketbook in front of the store believed to belong to N. M. Davis coal dealer. Davis valued the wallet at 1000 dollars and expressed thanks before walking away.
Wake land describes a brutal Northwest storm leaving Logansport residents seeking aid in Lisbon, North Dakota. Only six passenger trains entered Lisbon in three weeks with no freight. temperatures plunged to 44 below zero on the 15th. Snow depth reaches three to four feet, with some piles up to twenty five feet along rails. provisions scarce and coal and wood nearly exhausted.
The Red and Black staff elected new members to fill vacancies left by graduates. New editor in chief R Oliver Justice and editors Arthur R Donaldson Edmundson Wilson Edward Waters and Robh Kellar were chosen. Graduates were George Hoffman Harold Hendee and Roscoe MacGinnis. The paper will be published soon.
Fire crews were sent to Twenty third and North streets about five last night to tackle a rubbish pile fire. After returning to quarters a second alarm came from the water works, with reports of a possible house fire across the river. however no flames were found.
W. I. Shearer and twelve men labored all day and into today to haul ice from the Eel river between the Market and Third street bridges. The ice is five inches thick and half snow, not solid, and the work aims to keep future freezes from forming unsafe ice.
This morning at the high school Miss Elizabeth Stanton performed a Mozart piano piece during the opening exercises. Similar sessions are planned each Wednesday from 8 45 to 9 o clock. Next week George Hoffman will discuss Professor Van Dyke of Princeton University based on a lecture Hoffman attended in Annapolis on Poetry and Human Intercourse.
Judge Larry Rendered decision for Jordan Hecht in the case against Martin McHale administrator of Harry Corey estate. Hecht awarded $1.00 in damages and $100 attorney fees after a trial that drew crowds in the circuit court.
Miss Effie Lynn principal of Linlawn School in Wabash has lost control of her voice due to a severe cold. The condition affects her teaching duties at the local school.
In Galveston the Odd Fellows Cemetery Association sues Diana A Treffinger and Lydia Treffinger over condemnation damages for a tract intended for cemetery use. A jury of 12 is assigned. Other cases include dismissal of Tomlinson v Redmen for lack of prosecution and divorce proceedings involving Maude Steele.
C. A. Price, a noted marble and granite cutter, has bought the monument business of H. J. Foust on Court Street and is now in full charge. Price resides on Market Street, and friends predict a successful career.
Gus Gerrard the famous steeple climber told of a bold robbery at the county infirmary. A negro inmate befriended by Gus disappeared with his coat and the man’s son drove away. Gus plans to hang his next coat on a lightning rod to deter theft and seek revenge.
Three patients have been received at Longcliff hospital for the insane over the last two days. Ruth Groom of Jasper county was brought Monday, Frances Dewitt of Huntington county and Pearl Hall of Whitley county were admitted yesterday.
James M. Watson a Logansport horse trader enraged by booze morphine and rejection tore tin cup handle from a drinking cup and cut his throat from ear to ear and slashed both wrists. Prisoners overpowered him and he was restrained as physicians say he cannot recover. He flooded the jail as he tore water pipes from the walls and a hose was used. He was taken to Peru yesterday by constable Flanagan in shackles.
Eight men arrested in Ray's saloon were arraigned before Judge Smith. They claimed they were playing hearts and not gambling. No proof was offered, and they were discharged.
The Union Pacific and Northwestern railroads decline to offer government special rates for troop transport between San Francisco and Missouri. Omaha bids for moving 600 men 500 horses and equipment from Forts Robinson and Russell to San Francisco used regular full rates. Officials say the government will not obtain cheaper rates despite efforts.
A Washington dispatch says Senator Reed Smoot of Utah will learn Feb 20 at 4 p m whether he keeps his senate seat or is expelled. A resolution claims Smoot is not entitled to a seat, and the senate agreed to vote at 4 pm on that date.
The dedication of the Ninth Street Christian Church, originally set for Sunday February 3, is postponed to the third Sunday in February, now February 17, according to church notices and scheduling.
In police court John Thomas a colored man exclaimed I will drink whisky as long as I live and was sent back to jail. John Hawkins a vagrant was ordered out of town after arraignment for intoxication.
A local business man warns that Sunday selling by grocery stores newsstands cigar stands and saloons violates Indiana law. He vows a crusade against Sunday commerce noting similar moves in Kokomo Monticello and Royal Center and says shops persistently open will be punished after a formal investigation.
A Peru Grand vaudeville venue hosted its first Sunday show with illustrated songs moving pictures and a musical act. Despite minimal advertising the first performance nearly sold out and the second was well attended. Local reaction anticipates possible protests.
At Ben Hur hall the Pathfinders entertained members of the winning lodge after a recent contest. About three hundred attendees attended including fifty from Peru. The evening featured a large oyster supper, dancing, and socializing. A large class is planned for February 19.
The suits of William A. Ketchum and Emory B. Sellars against William B. Owens for attorney fees were dismissed this morning by the plaintiffs. The action ends without payment or recovery.
By the will of Theodore J. Deitz, a Boone township farmer who died recently, Mrs. John W. Markley inherits his estate with one dollar left to his daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Coble. The will was probated today.
