At the Logansport council last night the eight o'clock start drew reporters by surprise. The fire hose contract with Chicago Hose Co. was canceled after disputes over price and bid process. Council also authorized streetcar stopping rules and other routine actions while city finances showed modest gains.
A committee from the State Association of County Superintendents proposes a primmer to introduce Indiana school children to the first reader. They urge legislature for a primmer bill an increase in the school levy from 11 to 16 cents and for a bill creating a high school inspector. The state board of education endorses the levy and inspector measures. If authorized the primmer would let a new contract through the state board of school book commissioners.
Frank Adams employed at Panhandle shops on Twelfth street fainted in the cold night hours. Found unconscious in a snow bank between the tracks, he crawled back to the office with a shoulder injury. Workers revived him and he was taken home to recover.

A New York telegram reports Charles W. Blakeslee of New Haven sold a controlling stake in Wabash Traction to Indianapolis Traction. The move, linked to a newly completed Logansport to Wabash line, sparks speculation of changes in traction affairs.
A thirteen year old boy speaks unclearly due to a nearly absent palate. Despite years of effort, only close friends understand him. Parents plan to send him to Chicago specialists to reconstruct a roof to the mouth, hoping for clearer speech.
A wagon driver fell on an icy street, rose and chased his horse which wandered on unaware. Nethercutt captured the animal, then drove to Dr. Little’s office. The driver sustained a badly bruised head and several other injuries from the fall.
John Reed aged 75 of Remington was killed yesterday afternoon on Panhandle Railroad No. 374 crossing. While watching cars being switched on ice he slipped and was struck by a journal box, dying instantly.
The eighteenth annual council of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations convened in St. Louis with over 100 delegates. The executive board proposed continuing a memorial fund of 1,000,000 dollars for the Hebrew Union College endowment in Cincinnati and discussed Jewish rights as Americans abroad.
George Gonser former deputy secretary of state returned from Wyoming where he has been promoting the Senate Asphalt and Oil company. The firm with holdings in Belle Fourche area lists W. W. Moss Senator J. G. Powell P. A. Bonebrake B. F. Keesling and Dr. M. A. Jordan as prominent members. He reports locating an asphalt deposit of great value and brought crude asphalt samples from a rock crevice.
Soot burning in the chimney at the residence of George Blake on Front Street called the fire department last evening. Fire crews rushed along Sycamore Street at high speed and could not turn into a side street, forcing them to stop and reverse course.
Harry Walters of the East End had a thumb severed at Pitman’s Han Die Works this morning.
Graves fled the country after striking Ed Parker with a beer bottle during a quarrel over poker at a Kewanna joint on Saturday night January 18. The last known sighting was Wednesday in Kewanna as Parker was reported dying, prompting Graves to disappear.
H P Tead returns to his Decatur home after a brief visit with his uncle C P Purcell.
The man vanished soon after hearing the report and has not been seen since. Parker is now improving but remained in critical condition for several days with his life hanging in the balance.
A standing committee of Indiana church temperance groups in Indianapolis adopted four resolutions during a recently held meeting. They pledged to support the Nicholson law, oppose brewers attempts to remove rights to veto saloon presence, and urged patriotic voters to back legislators who defend the law. Copies were to be sent to secular and religious press and to all General Assembly members.
Patrons last night saw the orchestra play behind the scenes during intermission. The piano in the play was essential so the orchestra could perform, and Leader Steinhart initially refused to play. He finally compromised, entertaining the audience as curtains muffled the horn sounds and improved the music.
Frank Rhodes attended the Fletcher's Lake funeral for James Thursh 86 who died at his son N B Thrush Rochester. Thursh lived in Tipton and Harrison townships in the lumber trade. He married three times and outlived all wives. Martins Hughes funeral set from St Vincent de Paul church tomorrow morning. August Schiademan funeral at 1104 Sixth Street Friday at 2 PM.
Justice D E Bryer plans to resign as Logansport justice of the peace. George W Fender emerges as likely successor after Bryer closes his office in the Dowling and McHale building. Bryer cites dull court business and unaffordable rents as reasons for stepping down.
A large petition totaling 1400 women from Indiana urges passage of the pending pure food law. The measure would establish a state laboratory to investigate foodstuffs. Signers hail from Richmond Terre Haute South Bend Irvington Winchester Vincennes Cambridge City and Lafayette.
Logansport capitalists purchase land in zinc region near Carthage Missouri and form a $50,000 company. Directors include William M. Elliott, P. A. Bonebrake, Frank B. Wilkinson, J. T. Elliott, A. P. Jenks, C. M. Cordell, and J. F. Troutman. Company to begin development soon.
Attorney Sidney C. Rosenberg has opened an office at 408 Broadway over Johnson's hardware store in Logansport. A Yale graduate, he has practiced law here for several months with Nelson & Myers and has built a sizable practice in a brief period.
Wabash laborer Josiah Aiger filed for bankruptcy before Referee Swigart. He lists liabilities of 3744 and assets of 275 with a $600 exemption. The first creditors meeting is set for February 3 in Wabash.
Charles Rosentrader leaves Howe's plowhandle factory to take a conductor post with the Logansport and Wabash Traction Company on the local line.
