Indiana Senate considers a bill by Senator Kistler to cap real estate tax liens at ten years from May 1909, with liens attaching March 1 annually and extending ten years, except with extended suits. Other measures include a state bank deposit guaranty fund funded by a 1 percent levy and a voter participation reform bill.
Judge John S. Lairy ruled this morning that Charles Woolford owns thirteen turkeys valued at $20.90. Charles Marquiss must pay $20.90 plus court costs over $200 and attorney fees at least $100. The case began after a drought drove the birds to Marquiss’s farm and his refusal to return them. The decision ends the famous turf case with no appeal expected.
Chicago resident Willis Figter, once employed by Frank Labbie of 400 Wabash avenue, died yesterday in Cook County Hospital. Figter was a former resident of the city.
Buck Stanley, deputy sheriff under Lewis E. Beckley, seeks a deputy warden job at the Michigan City state prison. He has 11 years in the prison system and is considered highly qualified with strong Democratic backing. Governor Marshall says Reid will stay, but a new deputy warden may be appointed and Stanley hopes to be offered the position.
Bertha Husted was granted a divorce from Frank E. Husted yesterday afternoon. The plaintiff said her husband, a second cousin, forced her to marry as a schoolgirl in New York under threats to kill her.
The trolley baseball league is forming around stores this winter but Logansport is left out and no team is planned for next summer.
Longcliff hospital patients enjoyed a Broadway vaudeville performance titled actors praymen this week. Dr Hoffman, assistant superintendent, said such entertainments greatly benefit patient minds by relieving monotony and reducing delusions. He noted the patients remain rational and will discuss the visit for weeks. A luncheon followed with Dr Hoffman hosting and sharing details of the institution.
The board of public works received a petition from Miles Street residents to extend the mains. The extension from Douglass to Miles on Fifteenth Street was ordered. Herbert A. Brown reported $510 last week in electric light collections, and J. C. Sullivan reported $56.40 in water works collections.
The engagement of Miss Bertha Ritter daughter of Mr and Mrs Lewis Ritter of 107 Melbourne avenue was announced at a party for her parents Miss Ritter will wed Asa Poffenbarger of Evansville Indiana February 8 at the bride’s home
Panhandle Station Master Larger remains gravely ill after a fall on the platform this week. Doctors reported a sinking spell but he rallied earlier and is resting, with the situation described as not much improved and his condition critical.
Royal Centre and surrounding area residents are listed in social notes. Roy Smith and Henry Smith,Panhandle brakemen, are on sick list with J A Smith taking a week off. Mrs Pearl Coates hosted guests for Mrs Claude Markley of Pueblo Colo. Miss Lula Gorman visited in Star City and several locals welcomed guests and visitors from Logansport and Marion with church activities noted.
Frank Morgan alleged bank robber captured with Kinney waived trial in Lafayette and pled guilty receiving one to fourteen years. Kinney previously stood trial and drew ten to twenty years. Morgan’s plea clears doubt for many about Kinney’s guilt.
North Side residents complain Sixth and Third street bridges sidewalks were not cleaned due to a snow plow too wide for the girders and railing. As snow melted the slush makes walks nearly impassable and disagreeable to traverse.
Republican commissioners Stephen Boyer and Theodore Sewell have not resigned as governor Marshall holds off pending possible repeal of the Metropolitan police law. James Van Osdel and Thomas Bagot submitted resignations to allow free board reappointment, but Marshall asked them to serve until the legislature adjourns. He indicated new police boards would be Democratic if the law remains.
Merida Creek, a tarmer near Carmi, brought a dozen watermelons to market yesterday. The melons, kept in fodder stacks, were sold to local merchants and found in fine condition. Creek plans to store several hundred melons next year to test keeping quality. Stems sealed with wax and the interior juice remained sweet.
Thomas Meyer of this city attends the Indiana Saddlery association annual convention in Indianapolis. The welcome address was given by Mayor Bookwalter and the response delivered by Mr. Meyer.
In Logansport the boastful chorus of I told you so erupts after Senator Frank M. Kistler, the original Shively supporter, predicted months ago that Shively would win the United States Senate. Most townsfolk believed Kern would prevail, though a small group remained convinced Shively would win as the legislature shifted to a Democratic joint ballot.

Dr E M Hatch investigated a strong odor in his home after his missing cat returned as a dead body found on a cellar shelf. Fumigation did not cure the smell until the cat's corpse was removed and buried in the alley beneath eight inches of snow.
County Auditor George W. Cann announced Cass county receives the common school fund grant of 17 050 54 plus 2 200 liquor revenue and 1 040 59 from the congressional school fund. The total supports distribution to townships based on the last enumeration of school children.
Ernest Sellers, a Vandalia railroad brakeman, is laid off due to illness reducing crew at the yard and scheduling changes affecting service.
Charlies Sellers, superintendent, submitted a year’s report to the board of public works. The total collections exceed disbursements by $9,393.40 with $4,000 added to the sinking fund. December shows a net gain of $972.86.
Seattle January 14 Fielder Jones manager of the White Sox declares no dispute with Comiskey and says he is quitting the game to avoid being seen as a has been. He cites family business and real estate in Washington and Oregon and says he will likely settle in Portland while not managing next season.

Heavy snow caused the city building roof to leak. Water poured into the council chamber and hall as the snow melted. A tin man was summoned and repaired the roof promptly.
