Charles Luy Receives Lifelong Pension From Kokomo Company
Charles Luy, a blind messenger for the Central Union Telephone Co. in Kokomo, has been granted a $20 monthly pension effective December 1, to run for life. Luy, born in Logansport, began with the company in 1882, lost sight after a pole fall, and has served faithfully as a messenger for seventeen years. He is aided by memory and hearing to identify streetcars, omnibuses, cabs, and dray wagons, and for eight years has lived in the city hall fire department room, helping maintain order and property when not delivering messages. His pension follows Manager Murphy’s efforts, and his first pension check will arrive on his 50th birthday.
