George Cook of 416 Wabash avenue narrowly escaped death when a freight train struck him near Fifth and Canal streets at midnight. He grabbed the brake beam and was dragged along the tracks, suffering a facial cut and crushed ear but surviving with remarkable luck.
The Penn Chronicle reports about one hundred indictments by the recent grand jury in Miami County. Thirty four target saloonkeepers for slot machines, twenty nine target gambling room keepers and related offences, with other counts for showing gaming devices. Prostitutes and pimps are indicted, plus two cases of assault and battery and one for drunkenness. Some cases have pleaded guilty while many await appearance.
Early Sunday a group of East End youths found a wandering horse and tied it to Gilmore's cigar store front as a joke. Mr. Hagenbuck later proved ownership with police, reclaiming the horse.
A church rally is set for December at Broadway M E Church starting at 7 30 PM. Sunday school classes will contribute two minutes each to the program. Rev H N Herrick presiding elder of Kokomo is expected to give the evening address.

Judge John S. Larry orders a $50 fine against attorney Mahoney for court disrespect in a liquor trial. It marks a rare contempt sanction in the Cass Circuit Court, recalling older eras when judges acted decisively, though no recent record shows a similar incident.

Last Friday morning Mr and Mrs William Sutton living southeast of the city were nearly asphyxiated by gas from a soft coal stove. Mrs Sutton woke with a headache and opened a window while the hired man found their two sons nearly exhausted. All are weak but alive.
Jim Maloney, plowing for W L Sherer near the Third street bridge, fell through thin ice into the water. He clung to the plow and was rescued by coworkers as the horse team pulled the gear and man from the river. He suffered a severe wetting with no serious injuries reported.
Mrs Edna Gebee has left for Koko Mo to enjoy holiday time. The brief note records her travel to the destination during the season.
Special church services preceded a baptismal immersion at the Cicott street bridge. Five participants entered the icy water in snow white robes, including Mr. and Mrs. Schall Mr. LaDoll Mr. Mannvels and son Orley. Others to be immersed soon.
Hon Arsene Pujo of Louisiana advocates a bill calling for a $200000 war on the cotton boll weevil. The measure would authorize a slaughter method to eliminate the emigrant pest, with the Agriculture Secretary to decide if they are taken out and shot or hanged.
Uriah Starry of Walton fell on the pavement Saturday cooling his leg bone fracture serious for a five year old.
The Cass County Medical association closes a strong year with 32 members, up from 14. Tomorrow evening in the north courtroom a program features papers on Indiana native plants for disease treatment and physician duties to families in illness. Officers to be elected, with Dr. Eastman of Indianapolis and other specialists expected to speak. Five or six new member applications will be presented.
Ice chokes the Ohio River with gorges near Cincinnati as the Courier is pinned at Hanging Rock. The Adam steamboat sinks in ten feet of water from ice runouts, while Three Mile Island and the Green and Wa bash rivers feed more ice toward the Ohio. Alarm grows among steamboat men as rain and rising rivers risk widespread damage.
Sportsmen from the Missouri valley and across the country gather for a midwinter trap tournament at Lake Contrary grounds December 28 to 31. Big clubs enter teams, prize lists grow with St Joseph business support, and 2 000 live birds have been ordered in Chicago. Intercity team contests include Omaha, St Joseph, Kansas City and St Louis with the Wyeth world championship cup January 30 open to all and a $20 entry fee.
Two fires broke out today in the city. A kitchen rags blaze at M. Dehil’s home at Fifteenth and Usher damaged about fifty dollars before firefighters arrived. Earlier, a burning flue at Joe Carter’s Helm street home was put out without incident.
Three workers Charles Barnes Harry Galloway and Harvey Barnes were on a Market street Methodist church scaffold when it collapsed sending them fifteen feet to a lower scaffold. The wall also gave way burying Barnes under bricks and mortar but no bones were broken. He rode home in a private automobile. the other two escaped with minor injuries and returned to work.
The Indiana Supreme Court rules county clerks may keep per diem allowances for attending court, boosting Marion county Clerk W. E. Davis by about 3000 dollars annually and increasing J. W. Fesler and George Elliott by roughly 10000 dollars. The Flynn case from Tippecanoe county, written by Judge Jordan, with Dowl ing and Monks in dissent on the per diem provision, clarifies that clerks receive the fees for their own use under the fee and salary law. Marion clerk must staff five courts with deputies, and the ruling centers on per diem payments being for the clerk’s use rather than as general salary.
Dr. Carl Eigenman of Indiana University travels to Cuba to study blind fishes along the western coast, aiming to uncover their breeding season. This third Cuban expedition, funded by the Carnegie Institute, will last about two weeks with John Haseman of Linton as an accompanying zoology student.
