The Salvation Army collected 16.70 on Saturday for the Christmas fund for the poor. Santa Claus at Fourth and Market streets raised 37.60 and Captain Anderson logged 9.10 on the Fourth and Broadway cash register.
Four more suits filed in Cass circuit court by State Attorney General James Bingham seek judgments totaling 60 000 against ex trustees William J. Gibson Oliver P. Erbaugh James T. Denniston and Herman F E Martin with 5 000 asked against Martin. The actions follow refusals by current trustees to sue for recovery of alleged shortages reported by Swift and Connolly.
Bonds for the Dutchess road in Neer Creek Tipton and Jackson townships were sold last week to Breed and Harrison of Cincinnati. The proceeds total $3 929 and are on hand to begin construction of the road.
The Trades and Labor assembly met at Labor Hall and elected officers for the term. Officers include President J. L. Merz Cigarmakers Vice President Dora Smith Women’s Label League Statistician E. L. James Barbers Recording Secretary O. P. Smith Cigarmakers Secretary-Treasurer A. Halstead Tailors Sergeant-at-Arms Ed Wurpillat Brewery Workers Trustees Fred Hensel Martin Gust J. L. Merz William Asmus acted as installing officer. The Sunday session avoided Christmas day and yielded little other business.
Edward J. Fogarty former Democratic mayor of South Bend was chosen as warden by the board of trustees. He will assume duties after posting a $50,000 bond. His warden bond is $39,000 and he also bonds $206,000 as custodian for funds of the binder twine factory. Seven other prominent politicians sought the post as salary was cut from 3000 to 2750.
Mrs. Margaret Clare of Cincinnati, who recently moved to live with her sister-in-law at 1105 Linden Avenue, slipped on an icy sidewalk in front of St. Bridget's church and fractured her hip. She was taken to St Joseph's Hospital after Rev. Father P. J. Quinn and bystanders assisted. Doctors expect recovery despite a serious fracture. Also noted is ongoing murder trial activity in the Indiana case against Robert E. Cotterman, with jury empaneling underway and multiple challenges remaining.
The Royal Centre Gun Club plans a large shoot next Friday with invitations sent to the Ford Crossing andLogansport clubs. Attendees likely include members G W Hendee M A Weyand G M Wentz A J Conn Leslie Kistler C C Kistler and John and Emil Marx.
Frank Riehle faced Judge Samuel G. Gifford on assault and battery charges after allegedly striking Edward Rist near Klein and Griffin saloon on Broadway. Riehle was found guilty, jailed for eleven days, and awaits sentencing. Also jailed or fined were Charles Bigam, Louis Draper, Joseph Keough, and William Mowry on intoxication charges.
Three dispatchers on the Valley traction lines, now in Peru, will relocate to this city once the new offices over the traction station are opened. Trains will be dispatched from here instead of Peru, and Superintendent I. A. Battenburg will also have his offices in the new building.
Lafayette police issue alert for William Fuqua a fourteen year old missing from home thought to be in the city. He wore a light suit and a cap when he left home several days ago.
An explosion and subsequent fire at the New York Central railroad powerhouse in New York killed twelve men and injured thirty others. Boilers exploded and ignited gas in a large radiant area as the blaze followed.
The Woman's Union abel league celebrated eight years with a banquet at the White cafe on Saturday night. Mrs Anna B Fields of alwood international organizer spoke and helped inaugurate the local league eight years ago. Mrs Grace Tripp read a paper on league growth as Mrs P Smith presided as toast mistress.
Vandalia detective Floyd O Neal waited two hours for a train in Lucerne on Saturday afternoon. He began a slow walk along the yards and stepped aside to let the regular passenger train pass. He found it good exercise despite the delay.
Edwin Bauman of Pulaski county was shot in the leg by Ham Beaber of this city during a hunt. He was brought to St. Joseph's hospital for amputation and is reported resting easy.
A horse owned by J. W. Kistler of Fourteenth Street grocer vanished from in front of the interurban station on Third Street Saturday night and was struck by a South Side car. The wagon’s front wheels were demolished but the horse escaped injury.
Jesse Frohm a former policeman who has been operating a steam shovel for the Panhandle at Marion has returned to the city He purchased a home on the South Side Frohm will have charge of the shovel the Panhandle operates in a pit near Lake Cicott
