A Logansport survey shows local merchants expect 1909 holiday sales to rise 15 to 25 percent, with smaller shops up even more. Stores boast ample stock and higher quality goods as shoppers plan early purchases to beat the rush.
Joseph Stewart, city light department superintendent, says new street lights will be installed in the business district before Christmas if the council acts promptly. Better lighting is needed in the business district and on Sycamore Street. The council is likely to be called together this week to address the matter.
H. Kauffman, head of the Indiana Lighting Company at Wabash, is promoted to the commercial department in Lafayette. He will oversee the district including Wabash, Peru, Logansport, Lafayette and Lebanon and assume the new role at the start of the year.
Logansport court No. 233 Tribe of Ben Hur urges all members to attend Friday evening for officer elections. The group plans to entertain the Fraternal Congress next spring, so members should be especially engaged in selecting officers for the coming term.
Mary Alber files for insanity against William Alber to place Irene M eight and Geneva R six in Cass County orphans home. Other items note Jenkines charged with profanity after quarrel in a trench near Trimmer and Maggie Johnson's resignation as administratrix of William C. Johnson estate.
The Elks bowling team defeated the Chicago store 343 pins in the league opener. A J West rolled 189 and 191 for the Elks, while all members were in good form. Tonight the People's Store meets the Knights of Columbus.
The Logansport Frankfort and Southern Traction company has been granted a franchise to construct its line through Clinton county.
Health officer M. Charles Miller found Columbia school in good shape with clean halls and sanitary toilets. Four rooms measure 29 by 25 by 13 feet with 3 858.48 cubic feet air space each, adequate for 43 students per room, but enrollment is below average. All rooms heated to 70 degrees with good ventilation and individual drinking cups. water comes from a good well.
The city plans a movable pest house of twelve by twelve feet to treat smallpox patients anywhere in town. It would cost about $100 and aim to reduce expenses after a recent case at St. Joseph's hospital showed high costs for city care.
The basket factory will shut down December 23 for the annual overhaul and remain closed for two weeks. All machinery will be put in use for the big spring rush.
Reed Myers was fined five dollars and costs in police court this morning on intoxication charges and arranged to settle the amount. David Cronin, an old-timer, was arrested last night for intoxication and taken to Indianapolis, where he claimed he had a job.
Rollo Mills of Kokomo visited the city with friends and asked police to locate his wife formerly Minnie Michaels, sister to Bessie Michaels who was recently arrested for stealing a horse. Mills reported they left home last Friday and search of the city was fruitless.
In Cass circuit court Judge John S. Larry upheld Martha A Gruber's will valued at over a thousand, despite Fred G. Burke son’s challenge who was cut off without a penny. The will leaves the estate to Sarah Ahern sister and Glenn Sampson grandson, citing Ahern’s care of the deceased and finding undue influence. Attorneys for Ahern note appeal.
Plans for a new Baptist church, submitted by Bacon and Griswold, feature a basement swimming pool for church youth, plus a large terra cotta brick Greek Ionic edifice fronting Broadway. The project, costing about $30,000, aims to be completed by early August with 400 seats in the auditorium, 250 in the balcony, and a 260 capacity Sunday school room. The basement will also house a dining room, minister's study, three showers, six dressing rooms, and 25 lockers.
The board of public works met in regular session this morning with little business. Permits were granted to Mrs. Frank Shafer for a Third street theatre sign and to Smith Bros for the Stettiner Building. First half expenses were approved. routine semi monthly matters usually discussed then.
The Panhandle pay car will arrive Friday and all city workers will receive a liberal Christmas purse. City employees teachers post office staff Vandalia workers and other city employees will be paid on that date.
Thieves smashed a window at Jacob Keller meat market 217 Cicott Street and stole $70 from the cash register. It is the third break in in recent months, with no trace left except footprints in the snow and an unlocked rear door.
The Logansport court No. 233 Tribe of Ben Hur accepted an invitation to the Wallace Theatre in Peru for a spectacular initiation on Thursday evening December 15 at o'clock. An excellent program is planned and admission is free for all who can attend.
A pending circuit court contest of the election of M M Minnick postpones certainty of his Jan 1 start. If Ham montree prevails, Minnick must refund all salary and fees and give up the office, with Moroney potentially serving until a successor qualifies.
E L Henderson aged twenty five died last night at Longcliff after a two week confinement. His body was sent to Chase undertaking for shipment to Warren Indiana. Thomas Szeles also died at Longcliff and his remains were shipped to East Chicago for burial.
South Bend resident John C. Wagner aged about 61, reportedly worth up to a million, is held in the county jail after writing a marriage proposal to actress Miss Winifred Greenwood. He attempted to reach her at her residence and again at the Indiana theatre, while urging a lunacy commission be appointed.
Willard Jones of Clay township received word from attorney George Jr. Keyes in Challis Idaho about Martin Joice, once a city resident, who moved west twenty three years ago. Joice fell ill with pneumonia alone in his cabin after Thanksgiving, walked a mile and a half for help, and died soon after at another camp. He was a respected local citizen.
Miss Mary Peters daughter of Mr and Mrs H A Peters of 714 Linden avenue was stricken with acute appendicitis Sunday morning and underwent an operation at St Josephs hospital. She was brought to the hospital by Chase ambulance and was resting easy this afternoon. Miss Peters is employed at the Bee Hive.
The case of George Rees against J H Saxon was continued this morning in police court. Rees says Saxon struck him last night after Rees and others were removed from a Chinese restaurant for boisterous behavior and then from Saxon’s saloon for the same reason.
Rev. Father F. A. King once chaplain at St. Joseph's hospital now leads a church at La Otto. He suffered a slight paralysis during mass but is recovering well, officials say indicating the attack was not serious.
