Bondsmen meeting declares no pursuit to locate defaulter Treasurer Obenchain. If he returns to settle, prosecution doubtful. No warrant issued, and officials weigh possible civil remedies versus criminal action. Partial funds deficit estimated around 20 000 to 30 000 dollars with recovery efforts underway.
A December 14 meeting in Chicago of the Central Passenger association will discuss an interchange of business with traction companies. Early railroad opposition gave way to interest as traction firms considered affiliation, with some steam lines already consenting to movement toward broader cooperation.
The debate centers on overruling safeguards for railroad tickets and the anger of steam roads. The issue gains four new key phases as agitation continues and fears that affiliations with traction companies will be banned.
The state board of health reports a November death rate of 12 per 1000, about the same as last year’s November and lower than October. Diphtheria was the prevailing disease with typhoid fever second, with the north recording the lowest and the south the highest death rates.
A state commissioners meeting in Indianapolis drew a large crowd with debate on voting machines. John McGregor of Marion county urged machines, while resolutions called for salary fixes, higher purchasing power, and closer cooperation with charity groups. Visiting delegates toured the Marion county work house.
At a meeting in Syracuse Kosciusko county the Wawasee Fish Protective Association decided to draft a bill for a closed fishing season from March 20 to May 1 each year. J K Lilly of Indianapolis and reporters from Cincinnati Wabash Marion Chicago Akron attended and will back the bill. Representatives and senators from Elkhart Kosciusko and St Joseph counties are pledged to vote for it.
Miss Tillie Rimpler returns to her sister’s home on State street from Chicago after rumors linked her to the Obenchain defalcation. She tells the Reporter she knew nothing of office conditions and rushed home to refute the gossip. She worked since June in the county treasurer’s office handling tax duplicates and says the office’s happenings were surprising to her as to others.
An attorney has been employed by restaurant and saloon owners to assemble evidence aimed at forcing Sunday closures. Liquor dealers reportedly plan a campaign to compel all establishments to stay shut on Sundays.
William Roose offers fifty dollars for the arrest of the man last seen with Masse, Nick Bibo, whom Roose accuses of the killing along the Wabash river. Bibo reportedly tried to draw pay in Columbus and left town en route to Pennsylvania. Masse’s funeral was held at St. Vincent de Paul church with interment at Mt. Hope.
Laura Mader was granted a divorce from Frani Mader in circuit court after testimony of cruel treatment and abandonment. The couple married February 25 1893 and separated October 29 1904 with custody of their six year old adopted child requested by Laura Mader.
Years into the season, Conway proves a strong defense presence and may play in the first game as he trains daily under tough drills.
Justice Kleenne, ex judge of the police court, has issued over a hundred executions for unpaid fines. Constables and police will seize to enforce payment to avoid jail crowding. Many fined are military or unable to pay and will serve county time. the justice intends to clean up his books.
This morning in circuit court the state charged Patrick J Farrell with illegal liquor sales. A jury heard the case and by noon arguments were completed. The jurors had not yet returned a verdict at press time.
Hartford City Indiana December 15 reports a free lunch war among saloon keepers and restaurant owners aiming to close saloons at 11 pm and on Sundays. Prosperous saloons offered lunches causing hardship for smaller operators who vow strict Nicholson law enforcement. A detective and local officials are involved.
The Local office notes a Logansport polo craze as boys long for polo sticks or roller skates. Rivers run black with youth playing polo for two days, and sidewalks fill with boys before rivers freeze.
West Whiting, a heavily arrested Black man, was arraigned in West Whiting for assault and battery on his wife. The state initially sought a jury, but a compromise led to dismissal of jurors and the trial proceeding before the court.
Captain Whiting defends Conway after a rough first night and notes improved play as he works down in great form. The report recalls fan criticism but emphasizes renewed effort and progress.
Mrs. Catherine Kraub wife of Martin Kraub died Monday at her daughter’s home 1808 Jefferson. Funeral Thursday from St Joseph’s Church at 9 o’clock interment Mt St Vincent. Mrs Eliza Cuppy died at 2 this morning 1705 Knowlton street aged 85. Funeral Thursday 10 from residence interment Mt Hope. John Masse Italian victim of Bibo funeral 9 this morning from St Vincent de Paul Church interment Mt St Vincent.
The divorce between James Mount and Mrs. Birdimmel Mount was settled in Rushville with Mount paying $10,000, $15,000 less than demanded. No testimony was submitted as the case closed after early depositions wrangling and a pretrial compromise.
Mrs Martha E Gregg Newell wife of Charles G Newell formerly Wabash Railway agent died Monday at 5 pm at the family home 820 Spear Street aged 48. Survived by husband two children Helen and James and siblings James and Emma Gregg. Funeral at residence Wednesday December 14 at 1 20 pm conducted by Rev Walter Johnston then burial in Rochester New York with parents.
