A couple riding a railroad speeder near Germany, Fulton county, were struck by an east bound train. Mrs. Leslie Ralston was killed and Mr. Ralston escaped unharmed as the speeder was demolished. The pair had traveled from Rochester to Germany for work.
Eleven to thirteen express companies tell the Interstate Commerce Commission filing of rate schedules by August 28 is impractical. Adams Express proposes January 1 1907 as the new filing date after consulting peers. Commission action pending and extension likely.
The new law bars city officials from accepting railroad passes. Dr J P Hetherington Panhandle physician councilman. R N Donaldson school board member Panhandle freight agent. T R Sewell police commissioner chief clerk at Panhandle shops. Effort planned to oust Hetherington at the next meeting over corporate employment.
A movement began last night for a large mid-winter bazaar to aid the new hospital to be built in the East End on Sisters of St. Francis land. Knights of Columbus hall hosts discussed inviting all city charitable groups to help make the event the greatest of its kind.
Police report Harry Malone a colored youth of Logansport in custody in Plymouth on horse dealing charges. His father Joe Malone a local barber plans to travel to Plymouth to help investigate. The Ida Farmer case was continued in police court amid a dispute over overturned flower pots and a potched affidavit. Two tourist printers arrested for public drunkenness were released after humor at headquarters.
The new widows’ home at Lafayette, built with a 50 000 appropriation, occupies the north side of the grounds facing south. It houses 101 women in 101 sleeping rooms, with nine bathrooms, a kitchen, dining room, and reception parlors. Mrs. Laura Ingersoll is matron.
Special Judge Sheridan in Frankfort holds that two connected rooms can be treated as separate spaces allowing liquor sales in one and card games in the other. The ruling could weaken the Moore amendment of the Nicholson law and faces appeal. Saloon men hail the decision as a win and expect card games to continue.
The Vandalia railroad company fences a road used by rural carriers near Brazil Indiana claiming the road lies on its right of way. The Brazil postmaster ordered removal of twelve wires and the carrier resumed service. If fence remains the issue will be appealed to Washington.
Logansport labor leaders report 2 913 boys and 1 295 girls aged fourteen to sixteen were employed in Indiana factories in 1905, up from the prior year. Glass industries employed 630 boys and 50 girls. total workers included 190 141 people with 85 percent male and 15 7 percent female over sixteen.
Former Logansport attorney and city attorney T. J. Tuley was named assistant corporation counsel for Chicago by Mayor Dunne. J. Hamilton Lewis serves as chief counsel. Tuley, cousin of late Judge Murray F. P. Tuley of Chicago, left Logansport two years ago and now lives at 866 West Madison Street.
Frank V. Guthrie filed a civil action in Squire Reid's court naming Bert Leach and the Vandalia railroad as co defendants over an unpaid grocery bill. John Young, the plaintiff, alleges Bert Leach and a Vandalia worker signed a written promise to pay the debt, while Leach has since left the railroad role.
The Hinkle family reunion gathers about two hundred members from across the state and several other states at Spencer park. Attendees renew old friendships and form new ties during the event.
Jury commissioners met in the county clerk's office and drew the grand and petit jurors for the September term opening Saturday at 9 o clock. Eel township provides two grand jurors while four serve on the petit panel. Chemist H. E. Barnard of the state board of health finished analysis of twenty antimony samples bought in a major city. One sample was pure antimony. five contained some antimony. fifteen had none, seven of which were anthracite coal dust. Others included coal graphite iron rust and marble dust. Barnard calls wholesale antimony adulteration nearly the limit.
Charles McKernan, a Marion newspaper man, found his West Sixth street home empty after returning from St. Marys on August 19. Neighbors say his wife sold household goods the day after he left for Wabash. She is missing. he has notified relatives and police. He reports no domestic trouble. He has searched the country and received unanswered replies. Police asked to assist.
The Logansport and Lafayette Traction Company wins appraisal in condemnation against George W Seybold and wife to take land on Biddle's Island for an interurban line. Appraisers John Million Fred Engle and Joe Erb set price at 350 for Margaret Swegmen property but she accepts 350 plus relocation of her house at company expense. Seybold may contest. The company previously offered 500 for the few feet desired.
Indiana ends its heaviest binder twine season aside from 1902 as a bumper wheat crop drives 20 percent higher sales. Early dry weather delayed orders, then rapid demand caused delivery backlog. Michigan City prison produced the twine, sold in advance, with generally satisfactory results though some irregular portions were reported.
An explosion of coal oil at Walter Neff 500 Helm street scorched the kitchen but caused only nominal damage. Neff and neighbors extinguished the flames before the fire department arrived. no injuries reported.
The commission appointed by Judge Larry appraised four city lots on Race Street. Three lots valued at 1160 dollars each and one at 1200 dollars. Sealed bids will be received until September 1. Appraisers were Tom Finn, Seth Vesley, and Ed Matthews.
