An unknown black man entered Frank Tarono’s Dunkirk saloon, struck the bartender with a beer bottle, robbed the cash drawer of about fifteen dollars, and fled as Tarono and a bystander pursued him with a Winchester. Firearms were used but the robber escaped.
Three marriages were completed at the court house with couples receiving licenses late yesterday. William E Abelthuauser became Mr and Mrs by Mayor McKee. Ora A Riggle wed Effie F Farrer both of the city. David Elkins and Minnie Studebaker from Lincoln were also licensed. June through August show rising marriage activity with twenty seven licenses in August and three days left in the month. Divorces for June July and August totaled eight six and nine respectively.
A six member Knights of Columbus committee from the local lodge will attend the funeral of James A. Faget in Remington tomorrow. Faget, a prominent order member, died Saturday evening when his automobile went out of control between Rensselaer and Remington, overturning on a hill and killing him instantly. The deceased was a well known and popular gentleman in the lodge ranks. The committee included Will Hanley Terrence McGovern John Sheerin Charles Becker Gus Gleitz and W. B. Personett.
The September term begins Monday with 603 cases on the Cass county docket. Civil matters predominate with 297 cases, including 93 ditch and 113 probate cases. About 100 state cases are listed with indictments in roughly 90, plus numerous minor divorces, some potential filings, and delays due to jury commissioner James Douglass. Jurors will be drawn this week.
Miss Jennie Hill of Market street recognized in a metropolitan paper picture of Dr. D. G. Witzhoff charged as a bigamist. She says she married him six years ago and he left with 31000 of her money, ending her long search.
Officials discuss possible continuance of Indiana field coal rates to the gas belt without violating state law against discrimination. Commissioners seek opinions from railroad attorneys to gauge legality and avoid hardship while the case proceeds.
The Cass County Horsethief Detective association plans a large picnic at Spencer park on Thursday September 28 1905. Members and families expected to exceed a thousand with a big dinner speeches poems by Spry and Barnett and an auction by Col Foster selling eighty acres of farm stock. Attendance requires a basket of spring chicken and pie or a four dollar fine for a copy of the poems.
Public Works board will not pave Fifth Street from Broadway to High this year after a remonstrance by two of three resident owners negated the project. A contract for Smith Street improvements was awarded to David Haas at 58 cents per front foot. Sixth Street assessments tied to pavement were completed with final action set for September 19.
N. K. Smith is replaced as Huntington division superintendent by Frank Hardy, chief dispatcher of the system. It is not clear what Mr. Smith will do next, but he is expected to stay with the road. Hardy previously came from the Union Traction system.
The Cass county teachers institute counts 194 enrolled with expectations of reaching 200 before closing. With 225 in the county, including regular and substitute staff, the record appears strong. Today’s exercises met high standards and provided valuable instruction. At 4 this afternoon the institute adjourned to Spencer park for an evening social session and a planned program.
The Logansport school system announces that public schools will open Monday September 11, 1905. The board has ordered custodians to ready buildings, with many improvements completed or underway. Attendance is expected to rise and more space may be needed. heating at West Side is fixed and teachers have returned for a vigorous start.
The old Sixteenth street ditch is blamed for at least three typhoid cases along its banks. City health officials have long wrestled with the nuisance but cannot abate it. Spring and wet periods bring running water, followed by stagnation and putrefaction with typhoid germs. Doctors urge careful garbage disposal and weed control, noting other cities report similar linked outbreaks from local conditions and summer resort visits.
Geldman Beckman and Co. by attorney Geo W Funk filed in circuit court this afternoon against Thomas F Hilbert for 95 pounds to recover the amount of a promissory note. M B Larry left for South Dakota to spend several weeks hunting big game.

William May, jailed by Constable McElhaney for murder charges, is instead bound over to Jay county circuit court on shooting with intent to kill after Redkey residents aided in his rescue. Panhandle detective tensions and local sentiment highlight alleged railroad bias and procedural confusion.
Attorney Charles Yarlott secured two men to stand surety for William McClaer for 700 dollars. The bond men are prominent local businessmen. one is a longtime friend of McClae, the other reportedly has no prior acquaintance with the accused. The accused was granted liberty yesterday.
