An excursion train carrying Loganport visitors returning from Cincinnati derailed at South Yards. The train struck freight cars placed on the track, the collision occurring as the train moved about thirty five miles an hour. No further details on injuries or casualties are provided.
A Cincinnati excursion train collided with two freight cars in Logansport, killing fireman Walter Everman and injuring engineer Patrick Grady. The crash tore apart several cars, with passengers escaping mainly through windows. Grady later had both legs amputated and died hours after rescue. The incident mirrors a prior air hose failure on a similar accident later in the summer.
Two Longcliff asylum patients escaped guardians and wandered the city. Dr J L Short of LaGrange, aged sixty, joined Bryan lecture party then fled toward St Josephs hospital after misdirecting attendants. He carried a pilgrim staff and was recaptured near Davis bridge. Leo Steinberber of St Joseph county slipped out using a lost key at midnight and was found at Panhandle yards and returned to the asylum.
Michael Navin, a city water works plant employee, was injured shortly after 7 am when his right hand was caught between a cylinder head and piston shoulders. The second and third fingers were badly crushed and he received medical care from Dr. Rubsam.
Coroner Neff will issue a warrant against a Redkey town officer for murder in the shooting of William Purdy. Purdy died Sunday morning from a gunshot wound received during a Friday traction and railroad fight. The officer’s name is withheld but evidence is said conclusive. railroad men allege cold blooded shooting. Constable McElheny will travel to Redkey to serve the warrant and return the suspect.
At a county meeting held at Mc Connell & Fickle office in this city the old settlers decided to hold a reunion at Spencer park on September 18 if it does not conflict with the Horsethief Detective association picnic. Morning exercises and horsethief events may run that day, boosting attendance for both groups.
In a spirited Sunday clash at the rival city, the Jackpots lost 3 to 2 to Galveston. The score was 1 to 1 through nine innings, with a probable rematch on the horizon as both sides vow victory.
The Trades Assembly reports three prizes for Labor Day auto races a gold watch an umbrella and a box of cigars. Prizes will be exhibited at Hal B Smith and Jay Taylor for viewing before the event. General celebration plans progress satisfactorily.
County commissioners in special session awarded five bridge contracts to Attica Bridge company for 5 074 dollars, and a Pipe Creek fill contract to John H Snyder for 1 000 dollars. The United States Coal company received the coal contracts for 100 tons f o b at 2 85 and 50 tons for the courthouse basement at 3 10.
It was reported at the hospital this afternoon that the condition of Engineer Patrick Grady was very critical, and that the chances for his recovery are very doubtful. His family has been summoned to his bedside.
