Mrs. Pearl Gyer of 317 Front Street was severely burned when a gasoline stove exploded while she cooked. Neighbors aided after flames enveloped her clothing. Dr. Rubsam treated her. condition described as critical but improving, with burns on chest arms and face.
Major Scriven announces telegraphic communication is established in all Alaska signal corps areas including the Yukon and Copper River regions. Canadian lines provide current reach with plans for a Puget Sound to Skagway cable to ensure through connections with U S wires.
Mrs Emma McCarty sister of Clyde Musselman and John Meeks sweetheart was released on $100 bond after being held on charges related to the assault and robbery of Panfilio Dinfine an Italian section hand last December Meeks remained jailed in default of $1000 awaiting trial for concealing stolen goods.
The Cass County Medical Society gathers this afternoon with Superintendent Joseph G. Rogers of the Northern Insane Hospital at Longcliff. Dr. Cady will present a paper and Rogers will tour the hospital, addressing numerous complaints and their cures.
The board of directors of the Southern Indiana hospital for the insane will visit the hospital here next week. Members include Lee Rosenbaum of Mt. Vernon Newton Kelsey of Evansville and Joseph M Hudspeth of Booneville. Dr Laughlin, the hospital’s superintendent, will accompany them.
W H Legg of this city will depart Sunday for New York City as delegate from the local Eagles lodge to the national convention to be held September 1 through 4.

A pole hut with a clapboard root is two miles north of Peru in a gully beside the Lake Erie and Western railroad. A man, a woman, and a baby occupy the twelve by eight by six foot shelter with no doors or furniture. They sleep on a straw bed under a blanket and have declined offers of better accommodations. They own a horse and buggy.

A one and a half year old boy accidentally ingested a large amount of lye mistaken for candy. The child suffered severe mouth and facial burns and was treated by Dr Downey. an observer, a bystander nurse, also burned. The incident drew aid from nearby allies who heard the screams.
Yesterday evening William Ivans, a bartender at Martin Blighs, trimmed a lemon when a slipping knife severed the tip of his thumb. The blade cut away the fleshy portion and he received medical treatment at a doctor's office.
Bernard Duschene a Brown's restaurant baker is confined to his home at 1305 Wright Street with a sprained left ankle from a backstage scuffle with coworker Lawrence Hoover. He was thrown and his foot twisted last night behind the restaurant. He may be laid up for several weeks.
In Marion Indiana on August 27 the police board ordered a census of winerooms and liquor-selling rooms used by women. The board plans to close any such rooms after reporting findings to the next meeting. Women of age must enter the front door, approach the bar, and buy and drink their liquor.
Charles Nethercutt, long a partner in the Ideal grocery on Market Street, has sold his interest to his brother Mes Nethercutt. Mr and Mrs Nethercutt have separated and are visiting relatives in this city and county before leaving in about two weeks for the West to locate there.
Dr John A Martin surgeon at the Indiana state soldiers home in Lafay ette will resign at the September 4 board meeting after nearly five years service. Miss Florence Martin, superintendent of nurses, will also resign. Dr Theodore Sargent will succeed him as home surgeon.
Henry Adams of Newcastle Indiana sues the Panhandle Railroad company for $1000 claiming a late car caused a market drop on his regular shipments of dressed poultry to New York. He seeks damages for the loss.
Ten members of the Fulton county gun club issue a challenge to ten men from any other club in the state for a 260 bird shoot at $250 per side. Rochester hosts the county championship next Tuesday with a post-tournament trip to Hebron for a two day event involving the ten best marksmen.
An interurban car arriving from Peru at 7:00 a.m. was struck by eastbound Wabash train No. 8 at a crossing near the Dorner truck factory. The vestibule on the car was damaged but no passengers were seriously injured. The crash occurred due to brake failure. the conductor warned of the clear crossing, but the motorman could not stop in time.
Rev. Jay D. Fry sues trustees of Burlington Christian Church for 15000 alleging an article signed by them damaged his reputation after he resigned to take another pastorate in a western state. Defendants named include Joseph W. Gwinn J M Johnson B N Barnard and A C Patton.

Conductor Frank Dickinson of the Wabash freight service, residing at 67 Ewing Street Peru, lost his right arm in a Tuesday evening accident. While a train moved, he jumped to the platform for orders, struck an express truck, fell under the cars, and had the shoulder arm severed. He was brought to Peru on No. 3 and the arm amputated. he is resting and well regarded by colleagues.
Seventeen bids for dredging the Gault ditch were opened in the Auditor's office at 2 pm. R C Hillis & Company are believed to be the lowest bidder though calculations are needed to confirm. The 23 mile ditch drains Cass Fulton Pulaski and White counties into the Tippecanoe near Monticello. The dispute from last term's remonstrators ended in defeat.
Wabash Indiana August 27 Trustees of White's Institute farm contend with a 40 acre strip cut off by the Big Four railroad. They seek permission from the Friends Yearly Meeting to sell to build new facilities. land has been pledged for care of poor children. Indiana Northern traction seeks a right of way and condemnation actions are pending. 105 children are housed at the institute with county charges at 25 cents daily.
The force of the crash shattered the vestibule while the car barely protruded onto the track territory. Passengers were unharmed but the incident renews calls for an overhead crossing to prevent a deadly derailment if conditions were slightly different.

Charles F. Davis and George Kemp, oil workers for the American Oil and Gas Co., were overcome by gas fumes while cleaning an oil tank in Marion. Kemp was revived briefly but may die, Davis died after helping Kemp as gas filled the tank. Small amount of crude oil entered with the gas.
Walter Baldwin and Everett Williams, both about 17, on a wood haul to Hillsboro Indiana, fought off a large bald eagle that attacked them. They stunned the bird with a baggy whip and sticks, bringing it home alive. The eagle measured seven feet from tip to tip and weighed about twenty pounds.
The eleven months old Guy Everett Vernon died last night at his parents’ Shultz town home. Funeral is tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the residence with Rev Winegardner officiating. Interment at Mt Hope. The infant daughter of Mr and Mrs William Pratt died last night at 714 Eleventh Street. Interment at Deer Creek cemetery this morning.
A thunderstorm swept over Logansport early tearing into a rural area northwest of the city. George Hendrickson’s barn near Lucerne burned with hay and farm products as neighboring farmers, forming a fire brigade, could not stop the blaze though rain later fell. Three cows on the same farm were struck and killed by lightning. All stock and most machinery were saved and corn endured less harm than melons and truck crops.
A Tuesday storm struck near Deer Creek causing lightning to kill three cows on the farm of former Justice Never. The event coincided with heavy crop and property damage south of the city.
A Goshen dispatch reports William Springer, posing as an upholsterer, swept through Elkheart and Noble counties with a horse used for match races. He is said to have cleared at least $3,000 in a local season before vanishing to Huntington, alarming area horsemen after a $2,000 loss in Ligonier.
Seven international building trades presidents with 650000 members began a meeting in Indianapolis that could form a national federation to aid solidarity and arbitrate disputes. William J. Chappell of Middlebury, recently confined to the hospital, keeps hair uncut as a hobby and lives in a boxcar. He appears harmless but his relatives urge confinement as his odd habit troubles them.
