The Barnum & Bailey circus filled the West Side grounds with a capacity crowd this afternoon. A forty minute parade showcased giraffes elephants and thousands of spectators enjoyed the Grand Tournament pageant and the four section procession ending with the open cages of big cats and a mounted brass band.
Lonansport local post office seeks bids for a large filing case to store resident names on loose leaf cards. Alphabetical files by street and house number will aid mail carriers in addressing letters. Access is limited to postal authorities. inquiries for general info aren’t answered.
Fred Dykeman, an Anoka farmer, harvested 6651 bushels of wheat from ten acres, the season’s record. Storms blew much of the crop down and binders failed to harvest fully.
Mrs E J Edwards of Grove Street has returned home after a month visiting relatives and friends in Monticello Iowa.
Traveling salesman P H Westphal said his pocketbook containing 35 dollars was lifted on an Indiana traction car en route to the city. An elderly man was suspected but crowds prevented definite identification. Carl Leets of Peru was fined one cent for assault and battery after a dispute at a circus stand. Sheriff Volpert sought word on recent deer clover seed sales after 10 sacks were stolen in Peru.
In an opinion by Squire Reid a balloon ceremony does not require a marriage license. He argues marriage in the air lacks real estate and state grounding. Clerk Edward Hankee worries licenses and fees shrink as balloon nuptials rise, with balloon ascent costs around 300 dollars.
A wedding requires six attendees including two witnesses. The text notes that a balloon pilot could serve as one witness, making the party of five plus two witnesses sufficient for the ceremony.
Homer Cassube, son of William Cassube of 723 Linden Avenue, died by his own hand in the Grand Central Hotel New York City. A brief note said his wife would understand the reason. He had worked for John Leonard and later for J. G. Wilson before moving to Detroit and marrying recently. He was last heard of a few weeks ago during a visit with his bride.
Between 250 and 300 persons drown in a collision between two excursion steamers at the entrance to Montevideo harbor. Most victims are women and children aboard heavily loaded boats. the final death toll is not yet known and hundreds remain missing.
Hiram White of Chicago, in city visiting his parents, returns from Manitoba with fine oats from a homestead entered in 1908. He helped form a syndicate that bought 16 000 acres near Roblin, 240 miles NW of Winnipeg. Farms are thriving, taxes low, and school houses rising as settlement grows.
Members of the L A C football team held a practice last evening in the Kreuzberger lot. The first game will be played here September 15. There is talk of forming a league between this city Galveston Peru Kokomo Lafayette Wabash Huntington Marion and Indianapolis.
Two Culver cadets who contracted scarlet fever were hurried home last week to prevent spread of the disease, as officials acted to contain the illness.
The McKee faction faces a tough council of candidates for mayor with John E. Barnes possibly entering and George Welch likely to run. Welch draws strong support from McKee allies but risks a party knife vote if nominated. Landis Johnston lines up, while feud with McKee looms. Brown sets August 31 primaries and September 2 convention dates.
Report of a man described as Italian killed instantly by a Number three strike just east of Thornhope at about 5 am. Coroner from Pulaski County attended. Large crowds from Royal Centre and surrounding areas traveled to Logansport for the circus. Local residents and visitors describe ongoing moves, travel to Beckley, and various local visits and arrivals in the region.
George B. and Elia M. Terrell filed suit yesterday against William Heppe Sons asking for an injunction and 600 dollars in damages. They allege Heppe fertilizer factory on the South Side has hindered securing tenants on Unger Street due to the stench and seek to stop production and obtain damages.
The Board of Public Works approved a contract with United Coal Yards to supply anthracite coal at 6.75 per ton for about fifty tons a year, effective September 21 for one year. Bond of cement contractor Charles Alien approved. Building permits issued for two-story residences at 208 Fulton Street and 124 Wheatiana Avenue. Electric sign permit granted for Chicago store at 302 Market Street. Board rushed to finish to view the circus parade.
Three local residents joined a Barnum and Bailey circus parade. Miss Beacham of the Net Tie Trio rode a horse in the procession. Earl Hoffman, a former local boy, drums in the first band. Dr. Harry Grable, a physician with the show, notes frequent injuries among performers while audiences remain unaware.
The Vandalia Railroad ran a five coach special from Longcliff to the show grounds for insane patients attending the circus. Four hundred patients witnessed the performance and were seated at one end of the arena under guard by attendants.
At a rump convention in the Third ward delegates named last Friday night met again in the courthouse to seek an arrangement for harmony within the ward's city convention. Details of the agreement were not disclosed.
