Masked robbers blow Lakeville railroad safe
Early yesterday morning four masked men seized operator Hopple at the Vandalia tower in Lakeville and tied him. They broke into the nearby station door, blew the safe taking 24 dollars, then fled toward LaPaz junction and possibly Chicago as police chased the robbers. Hopple freed himself and alerted authorities. George Johnson, the Vandalia dispatcher, contacted the Lakeville telephone operator who could not reach townsfolk due to a robber's gun. South Bend police pursued by car but found the robbers had fled.
