An incident at Mrs. Hattie Sparrow’s boarding house at 417 Market Street involves Captain George Graham demanding access to every room. Sparrow and neighbors defend the house as respectable while noting the captain’s unusual power move and calling for discretion and warrants.

The last county road meetings by M. BE Eldridge drew strong farmer attendance and profits from the lectures. The crowd gathered at Twelve Mile and another session is planned in Lucerne tonight before Eldridge travels to Alabama Saturday to continue lecturing.
Rev. B. B. Bigler moved into a new country home near Galveston yesterday and will spend the summer there. He expected to stay for several years, but the Presbytery did not accept his resignation, so he will live there only in the summer.
Miss Ruth Delaplaine aged ten on her mother's Clay township farm sustained a double arm fracture last Friday when she tried to stop a hay wagon and slid off. She is reported improving steadily and recovering.
A large barn on Dan Clary’s farm ten miles north of the city burned Sunday. Four head of horses and twelve tons of hay were lost in the blaze.
Old Glory will head the parade with labor men following the flag on Labor Day in a community celebration.
Police Captain George Graham refused to lead a Labor Day parade drawing sharp union censure yet union men say they would not have marched if he had. The dispute centered on ordering Corporal Murtaugh to haul down the flag at the marine recruiting station and ends with a plan for a handsome American flag at the parade head.
The Conepoes Cooking club of Burrows and other towns broke camp yesterday at Pottawattomie point after a ten days outing. Chaperones were Mrs M Farrell and Mrs M McHale. Members included Mary Justice Ferda Ethel Scott Marie Gross Mayme Farrell Noreen Todd Margaret Fettig Frances Sherrin Marie Hanley Virginia Bradfield Kathrine McHale Oisie Dykeman Edith Cotner from Minneapolis and Hiatt from Delphi Margaret Porter of Marion.
Dr. Harry Shultz of Lucerne was in the city today. He traveled for business and met local officials during a brief visit.
Western Union operators walk out in sympathy with nationwide strike. Massena keeps day service available but night work halted as Indianapolis and other cities join the action. Substituting delays, messages accepted during daylight. press service disrupted nationwide.
Quincy A. Myers of the Industrial Association predicts the radiator plant will locate in town. Ten more lots sold this morning and similar sales expected this afternoon as the association races to raise the needed funds by tonight to cement the deal.
Emer Miller was arrested and is held for examination tomorrow charged with complicity in assaulting Harry Grace with intent to murder. Homer Cummings was arrested for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk.
Lieutenant McCauley announces Corporal Oliver J. Murtaugh is promoted to sergeant in the United States Marine Corps for service at the recruiting station in Logansport Indiana. The order notes his act defending Old Glory and cites support from McCauley and the Indiana district authorities.
Friends surprised Mr and Mrs Hal B Smith at their Broadway home for their tin wedding anniversary. Dinner was served at six o'clock with dishes on the table all tin though the food was delicious.
Fort Wayne and Lafayette Limited announces streetcars carrying the sign Fort Wayne and Lafayette Limited. Cars currently do not run through to Lafayette but will in a few weeks, expanding service in the city.
J A Anderson and W H Burrows who enlisted at the local U S marine recruiting office will depart tonight with First Lieutenant McCauley for Washington.
The Marion city board heard four local bids to supply anthracite coal from September 1 for up to a year. Bids came from John Hedde 7.14, Ed F. Leonard 7.50, C. L. Dilley 7.90, and Indiana Coal Company 7.74 per ton. The contract will be awarded at next Tuesday’s meeting.
Charles Cappel of the North Side with sons Will and Carl and son in law George Thompson forms a new milk business backing a local trust. He kept milk price at 60 cents and refused to join the trust earlier. With rapid growth he will add 180 cows and expand operations. Carl will run an automobile delivery wagon, replacing the bell with his horn.
H J McSheehy and wife left for their Lake Maxinkuckee cottage last Saturday but spent two days without household goods. A drayman mixed deliveries sending McSheehy’s items to Crawfordsville and the neighbor’s goods to the McSheehy cottage before they could recover and straighten the mix up.
A Fort Wayne car aboard a train leaving the city at 10 30 Sunday night at Wabash caught fire from an unknown cause. The fire department responded and extinguished the flames. The car suffered extensive damage to its base and was hauled to the shops for repairs.
The Casparis Stone company at Kenneth reports a surge in orders and requests workers. West of Fitch's Glen, a new quarry has increased production with more work this season than ever before.
Contractor H. W. Wiley of Chicago visited yesterday to inspect the Nelson Theater project. He praised progress and said foundation work will start in a few days.
Mrs Elizabeth Green widow of Benjamin Green of 816 Race Street is noted as Cass county’s longest resident, living here since 1820. Born September 8 1817 in Hamilton Ohio she moved with her father Silas Enyart to Cass county and resided mainly in Logansport. Her wedding to Benjamin Green occurred November 7 1837 after a delayed ceremony due to the minister’s absence and thief horse incident. The piece recalls early county travel by ox teams and asks readers who arrived before August 1834 to contact The Reporter.
Nearly all delegates to the national Phi Sigma Chi convention have arrived. The Barnett hotel hosted the first morning business meeting where last year’s reports were read and minor business transacted. An afternoon session amended the constitution. Miss Marguerite Richardson hosted an evening party and a hotel smoker followed. Tonight a reception is planned at Carl Ferguson’s home.
A large gang of workmen began improving Biddle's Island with grading on six streets and construction of gutters and sidewalks. After completion property owners will lay cement walks, enhancing the island’s appearance.
The Panhandle pad car is due to arrive in the city Saturday afternoon August 17 at 2 30. It will remain in the city all day Sunday, providing a traveling exhibit and public viewing opportunity.
