John Lowry of Walton was arraigned in police court for carrying concealed weapons after his wife Mrs Lowry feared he would shoot her as he chased her and her Walton beau. The couple’s family troubles span three months with a divorce granted but not entered over costs.
The Cass County Sunday School Association committee met Saturday and postponed the Spencer park picnic from August 10 to August 31. Officials expect a larger turnout as farm work will be better finished by the new date.
The bonds for the Cass Howard county line road were signed by the auditor and attested by the county commissioners this morning. County Auditor McGreevy forwarded them to J F Wild & Co attorneys for the company that purchased them. Once received and approved the funds are expected to follow. Howard county has already secured its money.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Darby of Front Street, adding a new member to their family.
In Tipton township a barn owned by James Woodling was struck by lightning and burned to the ground while James Woodling and family watched. David Bowman, a former Loganport firefighter, led a bucket brigade to save a nearby 1125 bushels oats structure and the surrounding shed. The flame-damaged barn held twenty tons of hay 500 bushels of wheat and farming implements. the Bowmans and hired man Bill Hoffman acted to save lives and property.
The county commissioners met in regular monthly session this morning handling routine matters. Voting machine bids were not acted on and a decision is expected tomorrow. At last week’s special meeting two bids were received: United States Standard at 25 machines for $700 each and National at $600 per machine. contract award was deferred to the regular meeting.
Irene Carr was located in rooms above the Journal office after her father, who came on a special delivery letter, found her ill in bed. He feared poverty at first but learned she was not as financially distressed as believed. recovery may see her return with him to Terre Haute.
A large barn on the Dr Scholl farm south of the city burned down about the same time as a prior blaze near the Miller farm. Authorities suspect the same incendiary started both fires. The barn was a substantial structure and was insured.
Mrs William Hilton and her family along with granddaughter Miss Helen Hilton departed this morning for a sojourn at Maxinkuckee.
A severe electrical storm last Saturday caused two trees in Riverside Park to be badly scarred and knocked limbs loose. Lightning damaged a new residence at Twenty second and High streets with a toppled chimney and falling bricks. Flooded streets and backwater hindered traffic while corn fields mostly escaped damage as one northern field was partially levelled.
The new federal building opened over the weekend with Jos. Taylor & Sons receiving the first mail from the office. Carrier John Mader made the first route start and is fined for the week to buy cigars for the force. Stamp, money order, and registry services now have separate windows for faster service.
Frank Williams was arrested Sunday morning as he stepped from a train from South Bend and arraigned in police court on wife desertion charges. The mother, ill with her own dying mother at Liberty Street, alleges he deserted her during pregnancy and has never seen their youngest child. The case was continued due to the defendant's mother's illness.
Saturday afternoon four tramps raided the home of Al Hahn between here and Peru, stealing a revolver and jewelry. Hahn cornered one gang member who, with Hahn's revolver, ordered him to halt. The farmers pursued as two hoboes were captured at Chili at midnight after a brief gunfight. two others eluded capture.
Jesse McClure, jailed nineteen years for the murder of his two young sons in Michigan City, lies ailing in the prison hospital. The man is described as a moral degenerate and may die at any time as his health fails.
Mr and Mrs E T Parker and daughter Lillian left today on the Wabash line for a visit to Parker’s former Vermont home. They plan to stay several weeks and return via the St Lawrence River Montreal and Niagara Falls.
Miss Anna Baade has returned to Huntington after a three weeks visit at her home in Jefferson township.
Frank Carper of South Bend has become demented from the excitement after an operation and will be brought to Longelitt this week. Carper was a prominent newspaper man and served as a correspondent in San Francisco.
Dr and Mrs L L Nelson Ima Carroll Nelson and Rev Craig attended the dedication of a new Christian church in Kokomo. The church cost 35000, with 17000 raised yesterday, leaving the church debt free. Rev F M Raines of Cincinnati led the dedicatory services and closed the evening ceremony.
William Gall of Huntington asks the Logansport Trades Assembly for a contract to perform a balloon ascent in Logansport on Labor Day. The matter has been taken under advisement.
A Saturday hail storm shattered windows citywide with over one hundred panes broken. Mrs O G McCormick, owner of a green house at Helm Street corner, suffered the most as her glass was blasted like gunfire.
Robert Toole, editor of the Flora Sentinel Enterprise, resigns as Flora town clerk to become advertising and circulation manager of the Wakemo Dispatch. He is a versatile newspaper man known across Indiana's Flora region.
Charles DeHaven Quince Palmer Bert Martin and Andy Johnson camp on the Watt farm along the Wabash reporting they are enjoying fried squirrels and broiled bass with a little Mum s to wash it down. They plan a two week stay if supplies hold up.
Maiden Laundry company files articles of incorporation to operate a general laundry and washing business in Logansport with capital stock of 12000 dollars. Stockholders are Charles H Maiden Rudolph Zack and August C Proseh. Stock divided into 120 shares valued at 100 dollars each.
A large barn on the James Mills farm south of the city across the Carroll county line burned before midnight. The blaze destroyed hay fodder and grain contents plus a double corn crib, with losses estimated at five to six thousand dollars. The owner suspects arson and plans to pursue suspects.
Bellefontaine Foundry and Macvine sue Josiah G Powell and Charles A Smith in circuit court for 3800 dollars and foreclosure of a mortgage on a ditch digging machine. The plaintiffs allege the note with 8 percent interest is overdue and unpaid. The case awaits the September term as contractors push to finish the Gault ditch.
Roy McDowell died from injuries after being kicked by a horse. The Bethlehem funeral drew perhaps 2000 people and 600 rigs, stretching three quarters of a mile on both sides of the Bethlehem church. Services were at 11 a.m. in the Bethlehem M E church with Rev. Kunse of Mexico officiating.
