A Baptist pastor in Logansport denounced the police board for allowing three illicit resorts and urged closing them. His sermon prompted the congregation to rise in support for action against the houses, highlighting societal harms and calls for swift measures.
New York August 5 Charles M Schwab extols marriage aimed careers advising girls to learn cooking and domestic skills. He urges replacing shops offices and studios with home duties saying there is no field offering better success than domestic service and that gentleness and homemaking win husbands. He cautions against careers and scholarly studies and urges practical kitchen tasks and perfected domestic arts.
Christian Denbolt of Jefferson township suffered a broken limb when he fell from an apple tree while trimming branches Saturday. He was attempting to trim and lost his balance, tumbling to the ground.
Local physicians report unusually low sickness this summer due to cool weather. They note fewer cases than in recent seasons and attribute it to milder temperatures.
The tenth annual state Saengerfest drew hundreds of German visitors to Terre Haute August 5. Delegations from Logansport Indianapolis Marion Anderson Peru and Alexandria joined Fort Wayne choirs for a day of singing and hospitality at Lake View park. The closing grand bar at the Lake View dance pavilion caps the event as 150 locals take part.
John C. Kienly of the West Side Vangalla freight crew suffered injuries in an accident near Colfax when dragged along the railroad tracks as he fell from a caboose step. He was knocked between platform and track with his son also bruised, but no bones were broken.
W. H. Morrison of Marion is in the city today for business reasons visiting local offices and meeting associates.
Marion promoters say construction will start within a week with work halted for franchise talks. They anticipate operable service by December 1908 to the city limits, pending a satisfactory entrance and a board of works decision this week.
A former youth named Harry Davis was found guilty of criminal assault by one jury and acquitted by another. He was sent to county jail on a highway robbery charge after allegedly robbing August Hankee at gunpoint of $4.50 near Sixth Street. Hankee identified Davis as the robber, and police traced him to a North Street tavern before a chase ended with his capture. Police found a gun and 42 cents on Davis. Prosecutor Custer and officers plan to use his police record at trial, deeming him dangerous.
Five road petitions were filed at the county board meeting with two approved for Bethlehem township. Adams Clinton and Jackson townships seek new roads. Sheriff Enyart’s $50 reward funds the capture of Dan Rebee who slashed Sol Rice. dispute over who should receive the money.
Ernest Pearson manager of the Red Cross pharmacy says he will fight charges by the pure food inspector over iodine sold below standard by the drugstore. Stockholder M B Hairy aims to make this a test case. Pearson cites former State Chemist Barnard who allegedly tested the tincture as above standard a year ago and asserts the same formula is still used.
Vandalia freight office workers held their annual picnic yesterday near Adamsboro along the Eel river. Attendees included Charles Morehart Ed Hoyt Ed Kelley George Williams Hugh Bahler Hugh McCoy Charlies Rasher Homer Goddard Harvey Schwerdmhn Bert Kiehm and U.S. Hauck.
C W Kelly alias McLaughlin, arrested in Fort Wayne and brought to this city for beating a hotel bill at the Murdock, was taken to Lafayette Saturday night where he is wanted for beating a bill at the Lahr house and for borrowing a large sum of money there.
Pathfinders lodge No 20 will charter a car to Komo September 11 for the grand ball of Howard Pathfinders lodge No 147. Elwood and Marion lodges will also attend.
The new Elks' home is rapidly nearing completion with walls finished and roof steel erected. The structural work should be done within a week or two.
After Harry Davis was arrested at the North Street resort, police raided the premises and six inmates and ten men were loaded into a patrol wagon. The crowd filled the police station area as the painted women and the landlady prepared for trial, while the men were released on recognition. Sixteen defendants faced Judge Smith and were fined ten dollars plus costs. all paid.
George Smith of McCormick and Richardson sustained a badly bruised face when a wagon he drove at Stevens planing mill yard ran away. The horse was frightened as he was leaving the lumber yard and the wagon overturned.
Miss Blanche Duffy Ruth Neville and Mayme McCarthy plan a Wednesday departure for Niagara Falls and other East Coast attractions detailing a social journey by bus and rail travel.
Police entered the Dunn Hotel cellar and found about twenty five to thirty men drinking beer and liquor. George Blake of the Twin hotel was detained for alleged liquor law violations while officers documented entrants at the wholesale house for possible federal grand jury actions. A drive to push saloons from wards one four and five faces organized remonstrances aimed at concentrating drinking establishments in the business district.
Citizens urged to attend Wednesday night in the north court room to back a radiator plant promising 200 jobs within two years, possibly 300 in three. Squires and business leaders tout civic pride and the chance to attract skilled mechanics and families, with funding from selling factory lots.
C L Ditsy & Co urges farmers to place fertilizer orders now as two to three weeks are needed for factory shipments. They claim fertilizer can boost wheat yields by eight to twelve bushels per acre at $2 to $2.50 per acre and note farmer John Rohrer’s belief that fertilizer determines crop success.
The McMillen reunion will be held Thursday August 15 at Spencer Park. The date was changed from August 22. Many relatives from western states will join local family members.
