Mrs. Clarence Hoke living three miles east of the city near Adamsboro narrowly escaped death when a gasoline stove she was filling exploded and set her clothing ablaze during the noonday meal preparations.
Tonight a big Logansport parade begins at Stettiner hall around 7 p m with police, Elks Citizens bands and Uniform Ranks of Woodmen Odd Fellows Knights of Pythias. The event, organized by the Logansport Commercial club, precedes a booster meeting at Elks hall and features George B P Irving as speaker.
Joseph Noel returns from Chicago where he has perfected an automatic stamp vending machine he invented. He believes the device will be a success.
In Royal Centre noon altercation ends with C O Donohue of Logansport attempting to “clean” George Graham. Marshal Safford apprehends Donohue and Justice Winslow fines him $1 plus costs over $4. Graham warns against further “jobs” and asserts he is peaceable but will defend himself.
The final day of the large race meet drew a big crowd as the 2:19 pace returned yesterday. Gravas, after an early setback, finished third in heat one but Cuninins drove clear to win three straight. Nedra the day mare scored the 2:15 trot and Nutline claimed the 2:50 trot. Paragon Candy won the 2:15 trot purse of $500 with Nedra as a leading contender and Grace D. won the three year old pace with a tight finish amid spirited heats.
The fifth game of the Union Sunday school league was held last night at the public grounds between Baptist and West Side Presbyterian teams. West Side Presbyterian won by a score of 20 to n/a, with Ryan Christie Gates Steffy Morris Harold Sheerin Youngker Schroeder among players.
Ninety patients from Longcliti were brought to this city and sent to Richmond at noon. Guards and attendants accompanied the train, and it may be that none on board realized the presence of so many insane individuals.
A noon meeting of Panhandle employees drew good attendance. J. G. Thomas, president of the Logansport Commercial Club, spoke under YMCA auspices. A mixed quartet from Market Street MK Church provided music.
Four sets of twins are said to have been born in Star City over the last four months. Each birth occurred in the same town section and on the twenty second day of the month, marking a peculiar pattern.
Frank and Rose Flanegin of Pearl street were arrested for assault and battery after an attempt to reclaim a borrowed umbrella. They were fined $1 and costs in city court this morning. Charles Reach testified as the complaining witness.
The Lafayette Journal reports Harry Lacey of Logansport was arrested in Peru yesterday evening at 7:25 by Superintendent Schrader. He faces questions about a gold watch stolen from a Peru woman and may reveal more about his involvement.
A group within the Republican wing pressured Mayor D. D. Fickle to appoint Harry Thompson as city engineer. Leaders including Johnny Johnston Charlie Spry and Steve Boyer used political maneuvering to place Thompson, signaling a strategic move against the Democrats and shaping future plans.
Roach reportedly borrowed an umbrella that was not returned and involved the Flannegins in a dispute. A boarder, Amemiabrel la, allegedly refused entry at Mrs. Penson’s home. Charles Kelly of Delphi was arrested for intoxication, fined, and jailed eleven days. An oil stove explosion caused minor burns to a woman who disposed of the burning stove.
Logansport residents will witness a two part stunt at Spencer Park Sunday. Dare Devil Phillips will slide a wire across the Eel River from a south tree to the north bank, starting with a leather mouthpiece and ending with a dramatic oil-soaked flame descent. He will drop into the water to extinguish the fire before reaching shore.
Tony Donnelly charged as part of a four person theft ring for stealing a horse and buggy. In Judge W C Hanawalt's court he arraigned and agreed to pay a fine of five dollars plus costs after initially pleading not guilty. He changed his mind en route to jail and settled.
Misses Mary Agnes and Elizabeth Harwood Margaret Gangloff Helen Lux Dorothy Martin Helen Fickle Mary Arthur and Lenon Morris form a camping party leaving today for a week along Eel river east of the city. Chaperoned by Mr and Mrs J W Harweood.
The weatherman reports rain widespread from Ohio to the New York area and along the east gulf and south Atlantic coast with heavy showers in places between the Mississippi and the Rockies. A list of twenty four hour rainfall shows Pittsburg 1.26 inches Iola Kansas 2.64 inches Moorhead Minnesota 1.02 inches. Temperatures remain moderate and cloudy conditions are expected tonight and Saturday with local showers continuing.
Dr. Water N. Fowler of Logansport files for divorce from Lillian M. Fowler in Cass circuit court. He claims she falsely accused him of infidelity, stalked him, ruined his medical practice, and prompted their move from Bluffton after a joint period with social prominence. He notes past Arctic service with Commodore Peary and places residence shifts to Logansport and Saginaw.
Schrader of this city to answer the charge of larceny. Mrs. Ethel Helmick of Peru recently lost a gold watch. A man who told a name Adam Woll attempted to sell the watch in Logansport but pawn brokers declined to buy it.
The piece accuses Mayor D D Fickle and the Democratic administration of failing on Broadway and North streets, blaming the party for construction woes while Republicans plot gains. Andrew Shadinger, of Company D 151st Indiana Infantry, died at Marion National Soldiers Home yesterday. His body was brought home today and interred in Mt Hope cemetery. Brother William Shadinger of this city survives.
The New Barnett hotel replaces white waitresses with colored men after the resignations of the white staff. Manager Horney declares he will never again employ girls.
The option election in Tipton township was very quiet with indications that the drys will win by a majority of fifty to seventy five.
A trespass suit is filed in Fulton circuit court against Charlies Showley of Bruce Lake by Ot to J. Bruce of Crown Point over a lakeside strip. Plaintiffs claim land ownership on two lots, allege illegal entry and damage, seek $50 damages and a temporary injunction. The case questions whether the state could deed land between the meander line and water edge after a historical survey showed the land shifted from the original line.
A Walton board meeting with resident owners resulted in a subscription plan to raise funds for a school addition. Five subscription papers were started with the board taking one and four residents taking the rest. By 10 PM Ed gar Phillips and Dr. Campbell each reported $275 toward the $300 goal per list.
An affidavit filed in Judge V C Hanawalt's court accuses Dell Wilson Daniel Wilson Harry Waiters Carl Waiters John Behee William Gibbs John Snyder Carl Snyder Martin Altmeyer John Jaun and John Fettig of rioting. The complainant Nick Milo says they stone him whenever he appears on Toledo street.
All lodge members not marching with the party tonight to Lafayette are urged to gather Sunday at 2 PM at the hall. They will organize travel to attend the state encampment in Lafayette.
