New York athletes John Flanagan Martin Sheridan and Mat McGrath, known for office jobs in the mayor's marshal’s office, are ordered to train like policemen and keep in condition to smash world records.
Lafayette beat Logansport 12 to 8 in ten innings after a six-run rally in the tenth. Lacey started, Thomas finished, with Comingore homering for Lafayette and Gunn umpiring. Bluffton crushed Wabash 21 to 2, while Huntington topped Marion.
Charles Bebee, confined at Cass county jail after being deemed insane and awaiting admission to Longcliff, is breaking from morphine. Deputy Harness reports Bebee refused tablets, insisting he will quit the drug at Longcliff, and remains a Republican candidate for justice of the peace.
Two empty box cars in the Vandalia yards were destroyed by fire this noon when an engine spark ignited loose straw in the cars. The switch engine crew saved the remaining cars in the siding, with only two burned.
The board of public works awarded the electric light plant machinery contract to General Electric of Chicago for a 750 kilowatt dynamo, nearly doubling capacity. Westinghouse was the other bidder but would require extra piping and air shafts. Delivery is set for October first.
The Ringling Brothers circus comes to Logansport with a three mile parade at 10 AM over the usual route. The show will feature 650 horses, hundreds of elephants, and a new menagerie built in England. Two performances are planned at 2 PM and 8 PM with an early ticket office opening at Red Ross pharmacy.
Mrs. Thomas R. Wood of Iroquois Illinois reports tracking her husband who left last week. She and her spouse ran a 19 year touring theatrical act and medicine show. He reportedly took most funds when he departed. The search spanned Lafayette Delphi and ends with renewed trail in Delphi.
Miss Beth Wilson, daughter of W. W. Wilson, will be queen of Venitian night at the Lake Winona water carnival on August 16. The queen sits on a flower decked float as hundreds of decorated floats pass, with Ina Nelson among the maids of honor in the parade and the float crowd aiming for best decoration again this year.
Residents oppose trimming Broadway between Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth streets to four feet each side to create a boulevard effect. City engineer H. H. Thompson may adjust paving specs after consulting city attorney Judge J. C. Nelson. changes would affect assessments and pavement costs. Board of Works favors conforming to current specifications to maintain the boulevard effect.
The Western Motor Works shut down this afternoon to let employees attend the races. No layoffs yet, but all staff were told to take vacation until further notice.
Supt J W Geer of the Panhandle and engineering department officials inspected the east end track work today. This was Geer’s first inspection in several weeks. The M of W offices employer attended the races this afternoon.
Dr F A Busjahn III, long plagued by ill health, suffered a slight stroke yesterday and remains in very serious condition. He has been under medical care for the past years seeking relief from his ailments.
Tonight at the Broadway theatre a program follows vaudeville and jungle acts featuring three wrestling bouts. Included are an exhibition between Miss May Smith and Miss Maude Williams, two Chicago girls, and a bout between Bob Barnes of this city and Kid Egger of Kokomo with Young Barnes also in action.
L. M. Linder of Matthews Indiana a sulky driver for L. D. Goodwin Urbana Ohio was thrown when the three year old pace horse Our Doctor balked at the start. He sustained a dislocated hip and internal injuries and was taken to St Joseph hospital in serious condition with consciousness not yet regained.
Opening day at Logansport Driving Club meet brings tight finishes and record bids. Possibility breaks 2:14 pace heat record before being edged. Electro Hal wins final pacing heat. Fleetwood dominates the 2:30 trot with multiple heat wins as Dr Coy exits lame. Entries include John K owned by John Kendall and twenty-three fast horses across 2:10 to 2:16 classes with several local entrants and purses noted.
