Death last words mark Utah execution of Peter Mortensen
Peter Mortensen, convicted of killing neighbor James R. Hay, was executed at Utah state prison. About 100 spectators watched as he died in a chair, four bullets striking him, two in the heart and two below it. He maintained innocence to the end, slept calmly the night before, and ate a hearty breakfast. Mortensen, born in Richfield and once a sawmill owner, faced public sentiment sharpened by his wife's separation. The 1901 homicide occurred when Hay went to collect money owed to Pacific Lumber. Mortensen was convicted in 1902 after a lengthy trial.
