Further Details of Martinique Horror

A British steamer Stena bound for New York from Montevideo and St. Buccia arrived with a vivid account of the Martinique eruption. Captain Jenny Cantell and passengers described ash showers, ships ashore at St Pierre, the Roddam's blaze, and survivors’ struggles. They visited Capt Freeman in St Lucia and recounted the chaotic scenes, the lava clouds, and the perilous escape by sea aided by the Roddam crew. The report links the Martinique disaster to similar historic eruptions on Morne Garou and St Vincent, noting vast changes to island geography and grim losses at sea.
