Saints Conference Urges Debt Payoff and Labor Reform

The seventy third semi annual conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened in the Salt Lake Tabernacle with about 10,000 attendees. President Joseph F. Smith urged debt repayment during prosperity and spoke on labor and manual training for youths, while leaders from multiple stakes reported prosperity and high tithing. Senator Reed Smoot addressed cleanliness and church cohesion, and J Golden Kimball proposed drastic changes to popularize the church including ending missionary work and temple endowments. The three sessions featured music, speeches on unionism, education, and church governance, with critical notes on opposition to Smoot and calls for reform.
