WPA district director Karl Wallace met with Llano county officials to push immediate selection of preferred projects. He urged fast start on street improvements and sewing room work for needy women, with wage levels set at 15 cents an hour for unskilled labor. Wallace noted the Buchanan dam project could absorb many workers and proposed indigent housing quarters to be built with dry brick and tile.

S. A. Livestock Supplies in the cattle division of the San Antonio market were stable Tuesday as shippers and order buyers aided price levels. Receipts 659 cattle 808 calves. Light calves sold around 6.00 dollars. heavier calves and yearlings 5.00 to 6.50. Cows and bulls weak near 4.00. Hog receipts 484 head with prices 8.00 to 9.25 for various weights. Sheep and goats light with fat lambs 6.00 to 7.00 and goats 1.50 to 2.50. Receipts cover 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Four H clubs report renewed interest and active plans for the year. Hutchinson group convened with 27 members and elected officers led by President Robert Pryor. Burnet County prepares a two day Old Settlers Reunion on October 5 and 6 at the Houghton Brownlee ranch between Burnet and Marble Falls on Highway 66. Highlights include an old fiddlers contest with three cash prizes and awards for the oldest attendee and the greatest distance traveler. Municipal bands from Marble Falls and Bertram will perform, with Sunday morning church services on the grounds. no admission fee.

United Telephone plans modern plant near Baptist church
The United Telephone company purchased a 75 by 150 foot site across from and south of the Baptist church to build a one story brick telephone building with basement and asbestos roof. Construction may start after the new year and finish within 60 days. Upgrading the current system will cost about 25000 dollars. Plans include pole removal on downtown streets and new uniform poles in residential areas with updated switchboard equipment.

Reconnaissance Underway for Lakeshore Drive Route
H E M Stevenson highway engineer reports a completed reconnaissance of the lakeshore drive from near Buchanan dam to the present highway 29 intersection a ten mile route with a notable elevator section for dam views. D E Manigault division engineer will inspect the line later this week and grading south of Llano on Highway 81 continues satisfactorily. No firm details on Llano river bridge plans are available beyond the highway department’s ongoing work.

County poultry raisers plan a two day Poultry and Turkey Show on November 8 and 9. Robert Redford is president with Mrs. Jake Winkel as vice president and Rudolph Schorlemmer as secretary treasurer. Directors from communities will promote exhibits and aid producers. The event will feature turkeys, market fowl grading, and breeding bird selection with domestic science exhibits led by Miss Ste Wart on. Canned goods handwork and county club displays will accompany farm demonstrations and terracing and farm equipment education. The show aims to attract many exhibits and be the most attractive yet.

Twenty Eight Drunk Cases Reported By Justice Mayes
Justice of the Peace J B Mayes filed a quarterly report showing 28 drunk enness cases and 39 total filings to the Lanio county commissioners court. The docket includes four disturbing the peace charges, two for unlicensed auto operation, one bogus check violation, two gate law violations, and one game law case with no conviction. Sixteen defendants chose jail over fines.

Grandmother Mary Hagemeier Dies at 101 in Texas
Mary Hagemeier of West Columbus Texas died last Friday at age 101 after an accidental hip fracture. Born in Germany she emigrated to Texas in 1846 during German colonization, living a full life with faculties intact until the accident.

Pecan Trees Face Walnut Caterpillar Invasion Across County
Walnut caterpillars are becoming very numerous in the county and harming pecan trees. The larvae are two inches long when full grown and light hairy. Eggs hatch on leaf undersides and the caterpillars feed on leaflets then entire leaves. Control centers on spraying with arsenate or lead at three pounds per fifty gallons of water. If few trees are affected, trees can be knocked off and dropped into kerosene.
Truck overturns on Mason highway burning. cedar posts stolen
A truck carrying 175 cedar posts overturned near Six Mile on the Mason highway Tuesday night and caught fire. Owned by G. C. Roberts, formerly of Menard and now of Marcie Falls, it burned while two companions from Belton were uninjured. Investigators found the next morning that thieves had stripped all valuable parts.

Construction of Buchanan Dam to Begin Soon
Reports from Llano indicate that work on the Buchanan Dam will start within days. Materials for rehabilitation have been ordered by the Reclamation Bureau and will be shipped directly to the site.
