Marine Staff Sgt. Dick Eastman will outline benefits of early enlistment to interested youths in Llano on Tuesday March 14. He will be at the Llano post office from 2 30 p.m. to 3 30 p.m. or contact GR 6 6411 Ext 6695 in Austin.
The Kingsland Llano bookmobile project started by Mrs. Erich Lappe expands with more volunteers and a possible permanent home. Aiming for a branch library before summer, the program serves Barrow Hall in Kingsland with biweekly stops from the Llano library, highlighting rising interest among retirees and youths.
J H Johnson 81 died at Brackenridge Hospital Austin Sunday night March 5. Funeral Wed March 8 at Waldrope with Lynn Nobles and Silas Howell officiating. Burial Tow Cemetery Son of Blige Johnson born San Saba County June 9 1885. Lived in Lone Grove ranching. Married Ella Mae Tow January 12 1910 Cherokee. Survived by wife two daughters Barbara Allen Austin Millie Ward Leander, one son J T Johnson Montgomery Alabama, one brother Walter Johnson San Saba, four grandchildren one great grandchild. Pallbearers Harl Clendennen Gale Ligon William Earl Holland Elton Hardin Ervin Johnson Billy Dee Tow.
Mr and Mrs Thaxter Nixon and son Danny traveled with Rod Decker to Houston last weekend to see their son and brother Bill Nixon and attend the stock show and rodeo with him.
Funeral services for Brown Mayes 66 of Lampasas were held at the Episcopal Church with burial in the Lampasas cemetery. Mayes died Friday March 3 after a stroke. He was born at Valley Spring in 1901 and worked for Orr Wholesale. Survived by widow Harriet, son Dennis of Austin, sister Mrs. Roger Hill of San Antonio, and brother Foley Mayes of Shiro.
Mr and Mrs A R Applegate of Kingsland Lodge returned from Kansas City Mo where they spent ten days representing the Highland Lake Tourist Association and the Kingsland Chamber of Commerce at a boat and travel show They headed the Hill Country display of the Texas Tourist Development Association and reported a terrifically large attendance They distributed 8000 Highland Lakes Tourist Association brochures and 3000 Kingsland Chamber of Commerce brochures.
Miss Elaine Holden and Jo Kuykendall led team demonstrations at the Valley Spring 4H Club meeting Monday night. Reynold Schorlemmer presented a rifle safety film and Betty Birk served as club representative for refreshments.
Mrs Alfred Petsch of Fredericksburg visited Llano last Wednesday and attended a coffee at the home of Mrs Miles Buttery honoring Mrs Linden Foster.
Llano Volunteer Fire Department answered two calls last week. One at Slater Ranch on Round Mountain road where a grass and brush blaze burned several acres. The second at Sunrise Beach on Sunday where grass caught fire likely caused by children near a hunting stand. Fire Chief Bill Walker said damage was not extensive.
