Finley's Mill Era and Family Visit in Llano
Historical notes recount J K Finley building a granite powered mill near the Slater ranch, later moved near the dam, with a six by four foot race and a large wooden wheel. The mill ground corn while wheat was scarce, drawing Llano county patrons, run by Finley's children on Saturdays until 1925. Part of the race remains by the south bank near the dam. Also, Clifford Reagar and daughter Martha of San Diego arrived for a two week Llano visit.

Martin's Barn Fort Near Cutoff Gap Built by Mr Martin of Virginia
The two story stone barn near Cutoff Gap served as storage and a fort with portholes to defend settlers from Indians. Martins kept food and horses inside to endure raids. Built before the Civil War, it later burned, leaving the stone lower section standing. A Keese mule incident nearby shows how valuable horses and mules were to settlers.
