Rain records show heavy totals in 1957 and 1958

Weather observer Glen Myers reports over 20 inches of rain officially in Liano in 1957 with turbulence affecting readings. For the same period in 1958 only 3.95 inches were recorded, and 1.46 inches fell in the past week as heavier rural rains were noted. Farmers finish oat harvest between showers.

Rural Contest Awards Night Set for June 17

Three Llano county Rural Neighborhood Progress Contest organizations will receive district and county awards at the Buchan an Dam LCRA Administration building on Monday June 17. Sam Whitlow and J D Precht will present district awards while Joh Cardwell presents county awards to Valley Spring Prairie Mountain and Lone Grove. A planning meeting was held Tuesday and the groups will furnish barbecue for the supper with Home Demonstration club members providing the remainder of the meal.

Breakdown Prevents City Pool Opening

A pool could not open Saturday due to a circulating system breakdown. City utilities officials said parts were shipped from California Wednesday and installation should take only a few hours after delivery, with reopening expected soon.

Two Burglary Suspects Held in Central Texas

Law officers from Fredericksburg and San Saba cooperated to arrest two men this week. Sunday night Northside Grocery was robbed of about 100 dollars. A 20 year old Lampasas suspect was caught after a chase with gunfire and tear gas. cash groceries and other merchandise were found. An accomplice, a 21 year old Hawks NM man, was arrested Monday at San Saha.

Two candidates Ruben Balko and Dr W B Aubrey Jr filed to fill the vacant alderman seat in a special election set for July 6. Lenox Ligon departed the council when he was elected mayor in April, creating the vacancy.

Quarter Million Dollars Loaned To Farmers

Far mers Home administration lent more than $251265 to farmers in Blanco Gillespie Kimble Liano Mason and Menard counties in the ten months ending April 30 1987. The heaviest demand funded operating expenses like feed seed fertilizer fuel and insecticides. OS: 18 500 Texas farmers and ranchers received up to 64 778 000 in total credits including operating emergency and real estate loans, an increase of about 6.5 million over last year. State Director Walter T McKay cited growth from family type farms and a shift from emergency to long term credit to balance operations.

Judge Childers to speak at Garrett Island Masonic gathering

Judge M A Childers of San Antonio will address the Master Masons of the 49th Masonic District and guests at a Lake Buchanan Garrett Island meeting on Saturday June 8 1957 from 2 to 5 30 pm with a fish fry supper and musical talks. Boats cross the lake to the Island and invitations are extended to all Master Masons to attend.

Rodeo Declared Successful Despite Final Show Cancellation

Despite threatening weather the 1957 rodeo was termed very successful by the Rodeo Committee. A large Thursday crowd attended while Saturday’s rain forced postponement and Sunday’s cancellation. Parade crowds enjoyed clear skies and warm weather.

Masons To Elect Tuesday June 11 at Masonic Hall

A stated meeting of Masons and annual election of officers will be held at the Masonic hall Tuesday June 11. Supper will be served at 7 30 p.m. A C Myrick is the retiring Master of the lodge. On the following Tuesday June 18 chapter and council elections will be held.

Jack Hardison Reassigned After Camp Chaffee Training

Jack Hardison will spend a two week furlough with his parents after completing basic training at Camp Chaffee Arkansas. Hardison and Loman Mullorn have been reassigned to Camp Chaffee in the clerk typist school for four months. Pardison served as battery clerk and assistant recruiting officer at the Burnel Reserve unit.

Ford Clinger Named Outstanding Conservationist of 1957

Ford Clinger received a plaque from the Lions Club for being the district’s outstanding conservationist of 1957 after a district tour on February 22 1957. Supervisors Lenex Ligon James Epperson and Charles Moss attended the presentation.

Game Rules Discussed in County Public Meeting

At a public meeting in the courthouse last week, residents and sportsmen discussed proposed fish and game regulations for Glans county under ula State Game Commission oversight. Most participants saw no major protests, though a few ranchers voiced dissent on hunting limits. Game Department biologist Jin Teer explained turkey and game rules noting a currently low wild turkey crop but signs of recovery and similar humming dates to last year.

Pony League Team Opens Season with 9 2 Win

The Liane Pony League beat the Mason Ponies 9 to 2 in the season opener at Museen Tuesday night May 2. Pitcher Dale Howard allowed one hit in the first inning, Henry Hammons pitched four innings with eleven strikeouts and no hits, while Dexter Smith and Kenry Hammons belted two home runs and two three-base hits respectively.
