Salt in Llano Explained by Ancient Ocean
Llano County historians asked the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology for a geologic explanation. Dr. Virgil Barnes stated that ocean water trapped in the Hickory Sandstone 500 million years ago supplied the salt found locally, with the Cambrian sea water remaining in sandy sediments as its escape routes were sealed by rock offsets.
