The Szano independent school district board re elected sixteen high and grade school teachers and elected one new teacher Miss Mary Loulie Peacock of Llano at its Thursday night meeting. Names of returning staff include Evelyn Jones Martin Brinkman Clayton Stribling and Mrs Howard Lange. Several staff positions remain unfilled. Present were several board members including Miles Buttery Damon Smith J L Conners John L Watkins A R Weber and A H Winkel with Charles Milliger absent.

Postmaster W. 8. Collins faced a swollen river crossing to obtain and explain veteran bonds procedures. He slipped into the swift Liano river but, after being carried downstream, reached solid ground with only his instructions lost to the current.

Handling Bonus Bonds Arrival Urged for Veterans
Instructions on delivering and handling bonus bonds have been issued by Postmaster W B Collins. Distribution is expected to begin June 16 or 17 with bonds delivered only to addressed veterans in person. About 225 county veterans may receive roughly 125000 dollars via local offices and Austin after conversion requests.

Court Delays Sentence In Texas Wool Theft Case Nobles

Former Llano Man Fatally Shot in Corpus Christi
Ted Walker formerly of Llano was found fatally shot at the Clark Smith residence in Corpus Christi. Coroner Joe Browning led the investigation as Walker, an employee of Mountjoy Parts, died with two bullets in his chest. Walker had recently returned to the Smith home with Charlie Smith after working late.

Youth Takes Vacation From Jail
Hulen also known as Spot, a 21 year old detainee, escaped Friday night then returned by Saturday after crossing the river at the stock pens. Relatives unaware of his escape visited in Liano and promised to bring him back. He had been sentenced to two years in district court for auto theft from W. H. Wallace.

Pioneer Celebrates 97th Birthday at Cherokee Home
G. J. Gray, a Cherokee faction pioneer born fifty years earlier than the 1860 settlement, marked his 97th birthday. He settled at Cherokee creek in 1860 and built his lifelong home eight years later. Surrounded by children Albert Gray and several daughters, plus Dr G L Gray and Raymond Gray, he remains mentally alert at the old homestead.

Llano River bridge project running behind schedule
Austin Bridge company faces a tight deadline with only about 30 working days left before the federal government charges liquidated damages of 35 per day. Engineer H E M Stevenson estimates the completion may slip beyond July and Mosher Steel, subcontractor for steel riveting, has 26 days to finish its part. Riveting of the first span remains incomplete as work on the second span resumes after high water.

Steel Worker Survives Red-Hot Rivet Accident
Gene Germany, a Austin steel worker on the Liana river bridge project, snatched rivets from a forge. A rivet flew and struck his head, burning scalp and drawing blood. He returned to work Friday afternoon with bandaged head.

Eaton Family Resettles in Llano After Job Move
Doc Eaton received a permanent position at Acme Dry Goods. Mrs. Eaton and their two year old child arrived in Llano on Monday from San Saba to settle here. Eaton is a known dry goods salesman previously with McInnis Dry Goods of San Saba for eight years. He recently left his assistant manager post at Hotel Llano. Gene Milligar traveled to Austin with friends on Sunday.
