Llano civic groups drive improved Little League facilities

Swimming Lessons Open Soon in Llano Pool

Llano residents can enroll in Red Cross swimming lessons to be offered after the new pool opens. Registration is underway for beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes taught by a licensed Red Cross instructor with a senior and multiple junior instructors. Lessons run 12 sessions, three times weekly, mornings, free except pool entry.

Work On Highway 29 Starts This Week In Llano

Construction began Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 18 and No 29 to widen the road to the bridge over Inks Lake. The project aims to add a new base and resurfacing over about five months. Bridges will not be widened now.

Rev. Edward J. Haffner arrives as resident pastor of Grace Episcopal Church Llano marking first settled minister since 1914. He moved with wife Jean and children Linda and Holt to assume duties June 1 after seminary in Austin and degrees in accounting. Llano Lions win 6-4 in 10 innings to open Little League season

At the local diamond the Llano Lions edged the Jaycees 6-4 in 10 innings in the season opener. Gobel drove in the decisive run with a 10th inning hit. Howard and Wagoner earned the win. Marble Falls shutout Fitzsimmons in another game. Friday features a double header with Lions vs Marble Falls and Fitzsimmons vs Jaycees at 6 15 p.m.

Lions Club Donates Toward New Bleachers for Llano Field

Llano Lions Club at weekly meeting approved a $300 donation toward concrete bleachers for Llano Little League. Spokesman Raymond Winkel said further fan contributions are needed to cover lighting and extra costs and aim to complete the project next season. Methodists Return Llano Pastor

The Rev. C. Herman Murph was reappointed to Lutie Watkins Memorial Methodist Church in Llano for the coming year by the Southwest Texas Conference meeting in San Antonio. Jaycees Build New Backstop For Diamond

The Liano Junior Chamber of Commerce led by President James Hoperson and a committee finished a new concrete and steel backstop for the local Little League diamond. Workers laid foundations, poured concrete, welded uprights, and stretched wire, costing about 400 dollars. Miss Carole Lehmberg visits Llano from Kingsville while preparing for summer study in Kingsville at Texas A&I.

Hung jury ends first trial in Brewer case

Last Friday the first Malcolm Brewer murder trial ended with a hung jury after about 11 hours of deliberation. Judge Ferguson set June 11 in Llano for resumption and for hearing Brewer's divorce and child custody suit. Jurors weighed penalties from five years suspended to 40 years.

Llano High Names Rol and Maclin Assistant Coach

Rol and Maclin of Ft Worth has been hired as Llano high school's assistant coach to replace Nelson Turnbow who resigned earlier. Maclin an All State tackle from Amon Carter and a two year letterman guard at TCU will join after earning a physical education degree in August. Superintendent C B Brown and TCU athletic director Dutch Meyer praise Maclin as one of TCU's best in a long time.

Winds Keep Llano Temperatures Mild For Week

Weather observer BE. W. Tarrence reports no rainfall in Llano over the past week. Moderate winds prevented temperatures from reaching the century mark. highs reached 100 last Thursday and lows dropped to 55 Monday. Mrs. Henry C. Wilthern visited her parents, the Cassadays, and will return to San Marcos next week for studies at Southwest Texas State Teachers College.
