Poll Tax Receipts Rise in Llano County Methord Motor Trends

Poll tax receipts surged in the Llano County Collector's office in January, totaling 1790 and boosting voting strength to about two thousand after exemptions. City collectors handled 504 receipts. January registrations show numerous new motor vehicle registrations from Llano and surrounding towns including Kingsland, Castell, Fredonia, and Taylor, with brands such as Ford Chevrolet and Durant.

Boy Scouts Plan Summer Encampment at Stege Park

At a meeting of Scout executives from the Austin Area Council the annual summer encampment was set for Stege Park above town. The area reports 47 troops 47 scout masters 51 assistant scouts 190 committee members 903 scouts in 24 towns, with membership up 11.5 percent from last year. Seventy five men from 12 towns attended the session to hear the year’s reports and set 1930 objectives.

Grady Paulson Russell Keyser Chas Milliger Lawrence Bruhl and Slater Duncan attended the annual meeting of the Boy Scout promoters for the district in Austin. They reported wide town representation and a wonderful program outlining the scouts work with a dinner served. they will file a full report.

Death of Mrs J H Billingsix in Alan City

Mrs J H Billingsix died yesterday at five PM at the home of Mrs Cora Moseley after pneumonia. Interment will be this afternoon at three in the family plot at Honay Creek cemetery. A longer notice will run next week. Cat Smith visited from San Antonio to see his parents Mr and Mrs SS Smith. Business conditions in Alan City were improving.

County Motor Vehicle Registrations Rise in February

Up to February there had been 1 282 registered vehicles in the county including 1 086 cars and 196 trucks across 21 930 license plates. The auto tax yielded $22 298 for county roads while seventy to seventy five miles of highway were turned over to the State.

Uncle Jack Katia Dead in Lombstone Quarry County

Uncle Jack Katia known as Cele Jack and Uncle Jack, longtime quarry worker, was found dead in his bed this morning. He had been staying with Mr. and Mrs. FE Harris and was praised for his robust health yesterday. Funeral services will be held at the city cemetery this afternoon, with exact time not yet announced.

Two Rains Improve County Moisture Conditions

Two rains this week added to county moisture with a half to an inch precipitation. Farmers and stockmen report ground improving, vegetation bears new growth, and lambing and planting plans advance as Bill Watkins visits and receives a Master Mason degree.

VICTOR RECORDER DRAWS CROWDS AT LANTEX THIS WEEK

Jimmie Rodgers performed at the Lantex theatre in Llano on Tuesday and Wednesday, drawing large crowds from nearby towns. Rodgers and his manager thanked Llano for its hospitality and noted Texas as their home state. Rodgers has built a fine Kerrville home and plans to stay.

Hereford Hereford Stribling Sale Draws Inquiries

The Stribling ranch auction of purebred Hereford cattle on Thursday February 27 draws inquiries from across the state and many northern and western states. A pavilion is nearly complete for the sale with a barbecue at eleven and sale to start at twelve. Organizers expect two to three thousand attendees and anticipate a record regional auction transfer.

A letter from R R Rickmay of Wear's Mil North Carolina reports the death of H A Coggins at Ashgill Fortharping on January 24 and burial January 26. Coggins long ran a mercantile business in Blufteon and retired years ago. He was a respected county leader with wide public service and many friends.

John Banks Store at Kingsland Destroyed by Fire

A Sunday morning blaze leveled John Banks Mercantile Store at Kingsland destroying building and stock. Fire origin unknown though suspected to have started in the roof. the modest structure was not fireproof beyond floors and ceilings. Loss estimated at four to five thousand dollars plus hundreds in feed. Banks had recently moved into the former Christian-Halford building, with a sizable regular stock and merchandise.

City Seals Purchase of Badu Park in Llano

Badu Park, once funded by the Chamber of Commerce, is now the property of the City of Llano after being bought from Llano Realty Company. The transfer follows a city committee report and private subscriptions that covered nearly all costs. the final balance was paid from chamber funds. The city plans park use for residents and tourists, with future improvements contemplated but not specified.

Llano Firemen resign in mass at regular meeting

Llano Volunteer Fire Department members announced at a February 4 1980 meeting they unanimously resigned effective March 4 1929 in a notice to the city. A luncheon club committee was formed to seek ways to retain the crew and maintain fire protection while praising the firefighters for saving property and securing low insurance rates.

The Southern hotel enters a new era with Mrs Currie Bullen leasing the rooming depart ment to Mrs S. B. Peacock and dining room and kitchen to Mrs Peacock. Both women assume full charge February 1 and plan to sustain high standards, renovating the building and expanding services. Mrs Peacock brings notable culinary reputation to Lianna, while Mrs Ballou reports strong patronage and plans further improvements. Allan Newsom leads committees for the annual rival stock show, with prize structure to reward calf growth and club boys. The event opens March in Liango, with premium lists and financing arranged. forecasts predict record county interest and entries.

Death of S. W. Slaughter Prominent Llano County Pioneer

After a months long illness S. W. Slaughter died February 1 11 4 at his daughter Mrs W J Barnett s home in Llano Born September 14 1853 in Tallahassee Mississippi he came to Llano County in 1831 and lived on Honey Creek before moving to Llano a year ago He married Sarah K Perry in 1874 who died in 1922 Survived by two children J W Slaughter and Mrs W J Barnett seven grandchildren six great grandchildren and a large circle of friends He joined the Baptist church in 1901 and remained a devout member Funeral services were held at the Barnett residence with Rev Wesley Prince and Rev Fr Vo McFatridge officiating and burial followed with many relatives in attendance.

Moore Sells Thoroughbred Stallion to Llano Man

Will Moore of San Saba delivered a thoroughbred stallion from the Moore ranch to Adolf Leipfleiner of Llano. The horse Galloping Lad was among Mr. Moore’s best and Ste Lemmer will stand in the coming season. The five year old was bred on the Moore ranch but due to an injured leg was not raced.
