Better Lawns for Winter and Summer
College Station reports Italian rye grass can be planted for a green winter lawn in central and Southern Texas. Sadie Hatfield of the A and M College Extension Service advises sowing one pound per 100 square feet after Bermuda is cut, followed by watering. For old lawns, fertilize or amend with soil and fertilizer, apply half to two inches deep. In tight soil loosen to six inches or more with a spade fork to help roots.
