Llano built an easy 7 to 2 victory over Mason led by solid pitching from Draper and strong defense. The win keeps Llano atop the percentage standings with Fredericksburg in pursuit as both teams vie for first place with five games remaining in the season.
Mrs J H Carter won hostess to tiled panel while Mrs W Y Fowler earned the club pin for high score. The roster includes Mrs J F Buttary Percy Brown Jeff Hurt W Y Fowler Frank Kothmann H C Roth Wilburn Qatman KE W T orrence W H Todd Fred Lange S B Peacock M W Tyson John Cone and W J Saunders. Visitants include Herbert Marshhall and family in Llano visiting Mrs Marsehall and Mr and Mrs W Fowler. Local business notes show North Texas conditions and a forecast of strong wholesale activity this fall.
Llano County adopts a tax rate of sixty two cents for the year, up from last year by three cents. A one cent increase funds the jury and a two cent rise creates a new street improvement fund for court house area paving. Despite small bond uses the rate remains among the state’s lowest while roads and county needs are met.
State political speaker A. Camp will visit Llane Tuesday evening August 19 at 8 30 in the courthouse lawn to support Rosa Sterling for governor. Camp, regarded as a top Texas orator, will discuss Sterling qualifications and may reference James E Ferguson’s official record. Citizens urged to attend regardless of agreement.
Allan Newsom and R A Byfield traveled to Austin to deliver a resolution from the Commissioners Court and City Council. The state requested the county repair two small bridges and the city assist in limiting heavy loads. work on Flag Creek bridge is underway and cooperation for Tequeat traffic was pledged. Additional notes mention D L Carl returning from Tennessee and Tennessee highway improvements, and Wachtman Kattzer and family visiting their relatives in Galveston.
County Commissioner F C Walborn reports a crew at work on Highway 29 Flag Creek bridge, tearing out the old floor and installing a new one. State projects pause until Llano River bridge work. county handles May Creek and Battery Hollow bridges first. completion may take months.
The Oatman Creek revival led by Ney J E Akin closed Sunday night with seven new church members. A Bible reading contest drew great interest across ten days with two prizes a large Bible for the top reader and a small Bible for the second. Orvil Tumblingon read 1292 chapters, G W Adams 1043, total chapters read 6847. Twelve children received testaments for participating.
The San Saba County fair opened Tuesday morning drawing many locals who attended for the day and others who went yesterday. Attendance was below former years due to extreme heat and dust while stables hold many good horses and racing has been quite good each afternoon.
Jon Melonis of Llano has become president of the Rotary Club of Georgetown after the death of Tom Lee. Melonis is a longtime Georgetown businessman, previously vice president, and has led the Commercial Club and other local organizations. Also noted are graduates and family updates from the area and a birth announcement in Austin.
Miss Irene Phu of this city and Mr Herbert Polvado of Brawley California were married Tuesday evening at Rev Wesley Arsace's home. Only relatives attended as the couple began life together in California.
Llano Municipal Band plans a booster tour starting Tuesday with eight cars carrying musicians through San Angelo Christoval Del Rio Uvalde Kerrville and intermediate towns. Return via Frio Canyon after a four day trip. Ball team excluded from plans and locals urged to contribute literature or materials to distribute.
The region endures extreme heat with daily temperatures near 107 degrees as long drought stretches across the countryside. Longtime residents report record dryness, noting ranch springs drying up for the first time in decades while cattle remain fat despite scarce corn.
Reverend Arthur W. Jones spoke at Baby Head last night urging support for Sterling for governor and opposing Jim Ferguson. The speaker praised Sterling and his work while a reviewer noted Ferguson could not hold office under Texas law and warned against granting political power in the state.
Strong Ross Sterling supporters convened at the law office of Withnurn Oadman last Saturday night to form a permanent political organization. W W Wat kins chairs the group with W B Collins secretary and Grady Ranbian treasurer. a $100 treasury fund was raised for literature and outreach. A publicity committee headed by T L Avery and a speakers group including Geo M Watkins and AL Bowman were named. county and town groups were set to disseminate material and urge voter turnout on election day.
The Tow Valley Camp Meeting will begin Sunday August 17 with Rev Sid Williams in charge of services. Music will be led by an evangelistic gang leader and many members will be illustrated on picture slides. This annual revival draws wide county interest with free camping space and tent and cot reservations on the grounds.
County commissioners met in regular monthly session this week. They approved regatta aid and discussed road and bridge projects on the state highway commission agenda. The court reviewed the county tax rate for the current year and related matters on the docket.
A group of about 45 women met in the district court to organize a Sterling for Governor campaign. Officers were elected, districts assigned, and plans set for a house to house effort starting Monday. enthusiastic members vow strong support for Sterling and opposition to feargusonism.
Former Texas highway official Jon Burkett spoke Saturday on the Ferguson administration bond issue. He urged public support and criticized Sterling Plan under which the state would face long bondage, noting the bond issue must be decided by voter action. The event drew about seventy five attendees on the courthouse square.
