The Shattered Violin and Gustave Thorez’s Downfall
A historic tale follows Gustave Thorez, a devoted violinist who awakens in Paris with Joachim’s praise, loses Gabrielle to America, drifts into Harlem style hardship, and ends by dying beside his violin after a final, tragic attempt to play Bach’s theme. The piece also juxtaposes Keener social scenes and a Philadelphia State Fair call to action.
