Great Blast at Lime Rock Quarries
The Lime Rock quarries west of town experienced a massive blast using 1,100 pounds of dynamite set in four holes 40 to 45 feet deep. Quarry owner C J Rover initiated the detonation, producing a loud report and an earth tremor. Estimated rock removal ranges from 5,000 to 6,000 tons, with most of the single rock now broken into fragments for long-term processing.

War Contract Awarded to Stiffel-Freeman Company at Philadelphia Arsenal
The Stiffel-Freeman Company has won a government contract for five enormous magazines to be built for the Frankfort arsenal in Philadelphia. Each magazine measures 7 feet 10 inches by 13 feet by 24 feet and will weigh about 40,000 pounds together. Production will take about four months. The firm is also handling a second contract for torpedo boat destroyer safes. Citizens are urged to save peach stones to aid gas mask charcoal production, delivered to Pfantz Bros. for the Red Cross. Last week S. C. Hassler bought Harry Firestone’s Wright bread route and has begun baking duties. E. E. Habecker bought a half-interest in Miller’s store at Broad and Orange, forming the Broad Street Department Store with C. R. Miller. Habecker brings years of retail experience.

Local War Work Plant Destroyed by Fire
A major fire last Friday night destroyed the Robert H. Yerger planing mill in Lititz along the railroad between North Cedar and Water streets. Engaged on a government war contract, the $20,000 loss was total. origin remains unknown, with Yerger suggesting incendiary causes. Mrs. M. H. Yoder first spotted flames from Hershey apartments and alerted the town, prompting rapid mobilization as firemen battled the blaze for hours, saving nearby buildings but leaving the mill in ruins.

Manheim Man Arrested for Desertion from Army
John Myers of Manheim was arrested this week by a State Constabulary member for desertion after jumping from a train en route from a training camp to an embarkation port. He has been active around Manheim and Lititz for weeks and is now jailed. A Sons of Veterans Camp meeting at G A R hall drew interest with Aument of Lancaster delivering an enlightening address. Another organizing meeting is planned for Monday evening September 23.

Mother and Child to Be Buried Together in Rothsville
Last summons lists Mrs Stella Stump of Leaman street dying at Lancaster General age 26. She left twins born September 2 and George died aged days old. Funeral from Allen Whitcraft’s home Second Avenue to Rothsville Lutheran Church with Rev H P Hagner officiating. Interment at nearby cemetery. Surviving parents husband and four children. Other Whitcraft relatives in Lititz and Rothsville. Also Mrs Catherine Shoemaker dies at 38 E Lincoln Avenue aged 70. Fate due to several illnesses. She was born in Penryn Penn township and was daughter of George Kabler. Additional survivors listed.

Leroy Adams, of Ephrata, was arrested as a deserter after failing to file his draft questionnaire. Constable Werner arrested him, and he was sent to Middletown then handed to Federal authorities. The story also notes a Ford touring car theft linked to Harrisburg and a soldier who took the vehicle to Houston, Ohio, where he was stopped by a police officer for no lights or license.
