Twain’s first typewriter ends up swapped for a saddle
In 1874 Mark Twain, during Boston visits with Dr. Twitchell, experimented with a new writing machine and wrote two letters on Dec 9. He mocked its faults and predicted future literary use, claiming to be the first to apply the typewriter to literature. The device prompted moral quips and a trade to Bliss for a sidesaddle, then returned, with Howells hesitating and losing out. The fate of the machine remains unknown.
