Thanksgiving Notes and Local Commerce in Berks County
Two men from Warwick and Hallville journeyed to the Blue Mountains, finding turkey prices high while apples and nuts were scarce. In town, barber W B Oehme added a chair to shorten waits and expanded stock of cigars and smokers’ materials. Thanksgiving activities paused local industries, stores, and schools until Monday, with turkey dinners priced around 24 cents per pound and geese at 14 cents. Premium lists for the Lancaster County Poultry Show were issued, offering cups, cash, an incubator, and other premiums. An accident near Warwick left Mrs Elizabeth Merley and her son Ed win shaken but unhurt after their mule spooked and upended the carriage. The Trout season shines at Spring Grounds though the pool and stream conditions merit cleaning.
