Ice Well Defies Seasons On Cheyenne Reservation
More than eight years ago John Spotted Wolf and his wife Mary dug a well near a pine tree at the Cheyenne reservation in eastern Montana. After days of effort the well reached 18 feet and then froze around the edges, yet a small opening remains year round. Water appears in warm weather as sun melts the ice, but freezes again at night, creating a permanent ice supply for nearby residents. Tourists view the strange phenomenon as a local curiosity.
