An 1876 account recalls a summer of heat in China as the narrator and friend Munson plan a Yangtze voyage aboard a Caïse boat with Canton crew and rifles on board. Tension rises when a suspicious junk approaches, warned by a trusted servant who fears pirates.
The narrator and Manson, pursued by Chinese junks off Papushan, counter treachery aboard. Ah Wing and Buddha aid, securing the crew and turning the craft, while Manson uses rifles to thin their lines. The Petulant arrives, the junks are defeated, and survivors are handed to Chinese authorities.
