The excerpt chronicles Harry Mallory and Marjorie Newton planning to elope to the Philippines, then a taxicab wreck delays them. On a transcontinental train a porter copes with a drunken passenger and a chatty, flirtatious Wellington who ridicules for divorce in Reno. Lathrop endures slights as the scene shifts toward a cliffhanger.
