Playing Fair in a Lawful Democracy Taft Advertisement

Farm Notes Inoculation Boosts Clover and Wheat
The piece notes cool weather spurring growth of wheat and grass with yellowing in low spots from ice. Farmers begin inoculating clover to boost soil fertility by fixing nitrogen. Morris Frederick inoculated seven acres for clover and alfalfa last year at a dollar an acre, gaining soil fertility and heavier yield, cutting twelve loads of hay from those acres.

Lambs Dropped in Price and City Butchers Raised Prices
J. C. Brubaker sold six early spring lambs at 25 cents a pound five weight, totaling over eleven dollars each. Prices have since fallen and Brubaker expects little return on remaining lambs. A Lancaster woman heard that poorer cuts were 55 cents per pound, and a butcher lamented rising costs. John Hess planted 15,000 early cabbage plants in Warwick township, using a tobacco planter, planning late cabbage and wholesale sales from Lancaster. He also has an acre and a half of pod peas and practices two to three crops on the same land, delaying his schedule due to a late spring. Clayton Brubaker reported Warwick township farm conditions, noting labor remains scarce but workable, with widespread cultivation and some shifts to grass and reduced tobacco, corn, and potato acreage. Farmers will persevere through hard work.
