Country Newspaper Has Its Trouble

The Lancaster County scene shows twenty county weeklies with aging staffs and unpaid editors. Editors face low pay, long hours, and a belief that paper profit comes from ads rather than real support. Small towns see free boosting but little local funding. A New York village paper overextends for local plays and obituaries, while chambers and lodges stress loyalty but seek cheaper services elsewhere. The piece argues that the weekly press in small communities struggles financially and for recognition.

Protests from readers aside, many publishers study costs and seek sustainable models, while communities weigh the weekly’s value to local life. Thursday notices urge society meetings, basement Usher events, and ad buys for shade-ready awnings.
